Engagement Ring Reset?

Has anyone here ever had Tiffany reset their ering? My platinum Tiffany setting is from 2014 and the band is a little thicker than I would prefer and I know they make thinner versions now. Just wondering if anyone knew the ballpark price they would charge for a reset?

Hoping you get some responses soon to your question. I recommend you go ahead and call their customer service to ask about this.

I have not had a ring reset, but I've had diamond earrings reset into a different metal, so essentially remaking the earring and purchasing new backs through Tiffany. It was either $250 or $500, I can't remember which, and it was worth it to me in order to wear the earrings more often in a metal I liked.

Not sure if it helps but I had my ring upgraded recently -Tiffany Novo(2013). The setting had to be replaced along with the diamond b/c they dont service the older style anymore( ex upgrade. Cleaning would've been fine).

Hi! Believe it or not, somehow I cracked my mounting (classic Tiffany 6-prong solitaire). I sent it in for a replacement. They built me a new mounting and I recall it was only a few hundred.

I was recently quoted $1000 to reset in the classic knife edge setting. I’d be curious to hear if anyone else has gotten a quote because I had another ring resized and that cost more than I expected.

Hmmm.... That seems high. Mine was a platinum knife edge and cost only a few hundred. They did keep my old knife edge setting so maybe they factored that in as they could melt down my old ring and reuse the platinum.

It felt high to me, too. You replaced the entire setting for only a few hundred? Do you mind if I ask how long ago you had it reset?

Hi... I don't mind at all, and I went and pulled up my info for you.
I actually took in my ring to get it reappraised for insurance. That is how Tiffany discovered my setting was cracked..(who knew you could crack a platinum setting). They recommended getting a new setting. This was done in Sept 2018. The total price I paid for the appraisal and the new setting was $674.84, including NY taxes (I did the repair in NYC).

So, assuming the appraisal was $150-200 (I forgot), the setting would have been about $474-524, including taxes.

Oh oh oh... BIG TIP...
When I picked up my ring, it looked fabulous I must say, all spanking new! After I got home, I noticed inside the band, the engraving of the carat weight and serial number was very light. It was not etched as deep as the Tiffany hallmark which I assume is standard on all ring settings and not engraved later. I was worried over time, the engraving would wear down and you would not be able to see the carat weight and serial number at all. I tried to tell myself it's fine and I could always get is redone later. But then I thought... nope... if I wait and it wears down, then I have to get it engraved again and pay for it because it will be due to my wear and tear. They will not believe me if I told them it was engraved very shallow to start with. So I took it back in to another Tiffany (I do not live near a Tiffany) and they fixed it for me at no charge. The new engraving looks much crisper. Please check your engraving inside to see if it is to your satisfaction after you pick up your ring. Mine was so faint you could barely read it.

Oh oh oh.. another TIP...
When I discovered my setting was cracked, I called my insurance and asked if it was covered and they said yes. So insurance paid for the repair. They did not pay for my appraisal of course. I have a separate rider for my jewelry. Maybe check with your insurance also.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for this. It helps to have a reference. I’ll try another store. I’m disappointed by how much the quotes vary, although I guess maybe the price has just gone up that much (although it would be nearly double). Maybe I’ll call their online number and see if I have any luck that way, too.

I never thought to check the engraving! I had my ring resized last year and just checked, and the engraving is also now very hard to read. I’ll add that to my growing list of requests.

Oh, and good tip about insurance. I wouldn’t have considered that. My ring is just wearing thin without any damage, so I’m guessing insurance wouldn’t cover the repair. Although I guess if I wait until it breaks it might!

Hi! I have State Farm and love them. I have lost and damaged several pieces... eg. Rolexes, diamond stud earrings, ruby ring, Tiffany diamond ring.... geez I sound like I beat up my bling [emoji51]

Every time I call I am covered. My rate also does not increase.

The key to picking an insurance company is that they replace it with the exact piece. So for example, you get a Tiffany diamond, not some “comparable” diamond. I also have full replacement value and get a check. I am not forced to buy my replacement item first to then get reimbursed.

True story here... I lost one of my diamond stud earrings. I called my insurance agent and he sent me a check for one earring. A few weeks later, I get another check for the exact same amount. I call my agent and tell him he paid me twice. My agent says, no... it was not a mistake. He says I was insured for a “pair of earrings” and you cannot use one earring without the other, so the second check was for the other stud. I got full replacement for a “pair of earrings”. Yippee! [emoji51]

Wow! Thanks so much. Would you know what this insurance is called? Is it an extra feature of home insurance

I think it’s called Personal Articles or something. It’s separate than your home. Tell the agent it’s for jewelry. Also, the cost is based on total amount insured... the more you insure, the less it costs per thousand. Something like that. Your agent will be able to tell you.

Good luck!
