So, I'm never in this sub-forum because I know diddly about jewelry. A really good friend of mine is getting engaged and has a choice between two diamonds, both are 1.25 carats. Can you let me know what you think the best choice is?

D-VVS2 or E-IF? From what I was reading it sounds like the E-IF option is the better choice. Both are the same price. Thanks so much!

Can I ask why such specs?

Lower it down a little to the maybe VS1-VS2 and F color range and the pricing would probably allow for a larger diamond.

But if those are the only choices I'd do D VVS2. I don't feel FL/IF are really worth the added cost.

i would choose the D because i'm color sensitive and i LOVE D color diamonds. i would never be able to tell the difference between VVS2 and IF without a loop, probably even with a loop haha! if i were your friend i would seriously consider going down to F color (colorless) and VS1/2 and get a BIGGER stone!

Those were the specs he chose.

Ame - Is there a big difference in color between a D and E?

Kim - That is a good suggestion. I will bring it up to him. His GF is a tiny girl so 1.25 would be ok on her although she may really like 1.5.

there will be no visible difference between a D & E colored stone, nor will there be a visible difference between an IF & a VVS2 . . .
I'd care MUCH more about the cut
Personally I'd choose a 2 carat w/ F color and an VS2 clarity IDEAL cut for same price.

I was thinking exactly these same things

Nope. Barely if any side-by-side. Go to an F even and you MIGHT barely see something. But only if the D and F are next to each other.

But there's really no need for VVS and IF clarities. Even with a loupe you won't find much if anything in there. Go to a VS1/VS2 and get a Super-Ideal cut stone.
