We are currently in the beginning stages of making my engagement ring. It will most likely be a 3ct emerald cut diamond but I’m also considering 2-3ct as my finger is a US size 4 and I am a petite girl.

Please advise on size! Also if anyone has a similar ring and finger size please would you show me some photographs of the ring on hand?

I am debating between getting it because I will love it and worrying it will look far too much. I don't want shrinkage and to end up seeking an upgrade in the future - I want one and done!

My ring finger was a size 4 and then after wearing my engagement and wedding band for so long I had to resize my engagement ring to a 3.5

My diamond is a 1.54 carat. Because I have small hands/finger size, it’s often mistaken for a 2 carat lol.

I think carat size is very much a preference sort of thing. My fiancé at the time was happy to get a 2 carat but I told him around 1.5 was plenty and I didn’t want him to spend too much money. (Though, to this day, he complains to me that he should have gotten a 2 carat lol; but honestly it never bothered me :P. Haha, he’s a sort of a go big or go home person but I’m more into what I think proportionally looks good on me)

I have heard that diamonds “shrink” as you used to them overtime. I haven’t personally experienced this yet but it is something to consider.

Hope this reference helps! Congratulations on your upcoming engagement!:yahoo:

I'm a 5.25 so my pics won't help. I was tossing up 2 different carat sizes for a platinum setting and went 2.8 (budget was the true restriction as specs have to be higher for emerald), plus step cut trap side stones. I definitely feel I could have gone bigger but that was a personal purchase not engagement. Shrinkage is a real thing.

Congratulations. I hope you land on something that you both love.

Diamdb has a great interactive tool where you can see what different size stones look like on your finger. I did 2 vs 3 ct emerald cut on size 4 finger and this is how it turns out.

What type of setting are you thinking you'd like? That may influence how big you may want to get, as well as budget of course. Screen Shot 2022-07-30 at 11.55.57 PM.png

You have beautiful hands. I love your wedding set. I think it's perfect.

@Swanky Just gorgeous!

@americandreaming My finger is bigger than yours at 5.75, but mine is an emerald cut like you are thinking of. I absolutely love it, and it still makes me happy to look at even though we got engaged in 2016 (so it isn’t exactly new.)

For reference, the center stone is 2.23 carats, not including the halo and band stones.

Be picky on quality for an emerald cut. If there are too many inclusions, you’ll see them more than on some other cuts. But a nice one is something special!

Personally I would go with the bigger size because shrinkage is real. Keep going to the jewelry stores and trying on stone sizes until you feel comfortable.

Otoh, if you are worried the larger stone can be perceived as too much, that could also be a real thing as well depending on how you would feel about the attention. One of my friends has a fabulous larger sized stone and after awhile she received so much uncomfortable attention from friends/family that she rarely wears it anymore

My e-ring (1.8-ish carats) is a standard size for my area so while I have the shrinkage & always lust after a bigger stone, I never think twice about wearing it out anywhere and it doesn’t attract attention.

Thanks!
Your ring is beautiful, I love an EC!

@bisousx agreed. I hate attention of any kind. I remember a cashier saying "wow! He must really love you!!" as if a smaller stone equated to less love for me. I remember my face absolutely burning. Also comments from anyone, strangers, friends or family asking how much. . . omg
My ring before with my ex was a little smaller with no halo and I hated the attention I'd get sometimes. This time around my new DH wanted to get something bigger than my ex (lol, boys!) and loved Victor's halo but knew I didn't want anything big so we went with the teeniest of halos VC could do. He was SO stinkin' excited with the process of sourcing THE stone with Victor and working up the setting that I feel different this time around. I think not liking the attention is why I love a delicate setting with my stones perhaps, a thick band with a big stone is too much for me.
Shrinkage IS real though, as big as I thought my ring was, that thought went away relatively quickly lol
If I'm in an area or situation where getting to enjoy the beautiful gift DH proposed with, I'll just wear the little band.

All that said, the size you're looking at isn't ostentatious, if an excellent stone in that weight is available and in your price range, I'd do it!

I’m a ring size 7 and I wear a 10ct round solitaire .. I don’t think finger size matters but I wear a lot of jewelry.. I would go for the 3ct . I also think it’s not all about size ..

Depending on your budget , see what cut /clarity you are going to get with different sizes …. I wouldn’t want a larger ring where I could see imperfections just by looking at it . I’d rather get a bit smaller but better clarity/color

Omg 10 cts?! I would love to see a picture of your ring!

True, I understand the feeling. My e-ring got a lot of attention at work. When I was engaged, I didn't even bother to tell anyone. (I didn't want to show off and I kept my dating/personal life very private.) It was until about a few days later my boss saw the ring and her eyes popped out, haha. And then of course, she went to go tell everyone. Which I honestly didn't mind, I knew people would find out sooner or later. :P And then for that month, a lot of people came up to me to see it.
I remember one of the head surgeons stuck out his hand to me and I thought he wanted me to give him an updated report for something, so I handed him the report, and he was like, no! let me see the ring!
No jealousy or bad gossip of any kind at work though. Just a lot of attention haha. That is a good point though!

Thank you - I would love to see photos of your ring anyway! X
