JAR fragrances are quite distinctive & elegant.. Unusual notes in Golcanda, Diamond Water, Jarling
Frederic Malle, Hermes, Creed, Roja Dove's fragrances interesting as well
Chanel comes to mind as well, Tom Ford too

People perceive fragrances differently. It would be better for you to tell us what kinds of fragrances or fragrance notes you find to be "elegant" because then it would be easier to give you suggestions.
As mentioned, scent and fragrances are very subjective. That said, I receive many, many "elegant and classic" compliments when I am wearing Chanel Mademoiselle (both the original and the newer Intense along with the body oil, cream, deodorant and powder layered for depth and intensity) and Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt (layering the perfume with the cream). Love them both very much.
Hermes 24 Faubourg - I bought 4 bottles 
I have a healthy handful of perfumes and the 2 I receive the most compliments for is Dior's J'adore and even more for Hermes' Un Jardin Sur Le Toit. Good luck!
