Hi everyone,
I wasn't sure where to post this, but I thought I would post this here since this scam in particular when I encountered it was targeting buyers of Chanel bags.
Please be extremely diligent purchasing handbags off places like Facebook marketplace, Gumtree, Craigslist, etc. However, this scam is so elaborate that it could potentially fool people who use other websites. Make sure to purchase the bag from a reputable reseller or the boutique if you want to ensure you're getting the real deal!
So here's the story. I was browsing Facebook marketplace and came across a woman selling a classic flap in black caviar leather and silver hardware for $2800. The bag LOOKED authentic from the photos (glancing over), and the woman happily provided me with a gift receipt from the boutique, and a "proof of authentication verification" from a shady verification service I have never heard of, nor do they come up on a quick Google search.
For someone who isn't well versed with Chanel, they would easily fall for this scam. Not only does the bag look legitmate, but the serial number matches the one provided on the receipt as well as the authentication card.
Here is the biggest giveaway that the receipt is a FAKE:
The font of CHANEL is thinner and looks strange than the letting you would find on an authentic receipt.
The Boston, MA store is Store number #15. The receipt says that this store is store #1, which would be the store in Honolulu, HI.
These scammers are getting SO good, that the series code for the bag matches when it was "purchased", which is in 2020.
To further try and make things look "authentic", this person had the bag "verified" by a fake non existant authentication service with a scannable QR code to make it look even more legitmate.
She was in a hurry to sell this bag and wanted to meet somewhere in the middle of where we both live. I understand, this is due to safety reasons but it is also a great way to hide where she really lived and to cover up her tracks.
These scams are getting so elaborate that they are even faking receipts to the point of looking REAL! Along with the client information and everything! It is truly scary.
I have even heard of individuals providing legitmate receipts and documentation, and then having a super fake created with the exact same serial number to fool unsuspecting buyers.
I just thought I would share this with you because I don't want anyone to get scammed purchasing such a high ticket item. If it's too good to be true, it probably is.
