Hi, I was examining my van cleef yellow gold vintage diamond earrings when I noticed that the clip hinge at the back is a darker shade than the rest of my earrings. It’s hard to capture it on camera. But, it’s noticeable with the naked eye. I’ve inserted pictures of the earrings with the darkened parts circled. The darkened parts look like the yellow gold has rubbed off or the black colour has transferred from the box onto the corners of the earrings. On the left earring especially, it looks like the yellow gold has been chipping off.

This pair of earrings are relatively new. I have never showered or swam with them on. I’ve compared this pair of yellow gold earrings with my rose gold ones and this yellow gold pair definitely looks darker at the back. I’m worried that I’ve gotten a faulty pair. My other pairs of non branded yellow gold earrings don’t tarnish or chip like this. Please let me know what you think.

White gold hinges on a yellow gold earring? Why would they do that?
Almost all newer-era earrings (I can’t speak of Haute Jewelry and seen some Magic that don’t) at least in the last-15 years or so (paging @nicole0612 for a more-accurate timeline) have the hinge or I don’t know what it’s called it actually may not move, but it’s on the back near the hinge, in WG, or what I assume is WG, where the OR is engraved.

I am by no means an expert on earrings, but of course I can confirm that it is normal for modern earrings. Looking at my own collection for the very vintage ones in YG and RG, the color difference is present for JB, BL, CL, and even the very old ones with the longer prongs and larger clip backs (chrysoprase) as well as the even older ones with the messier style front that looks like it was glued in, the fatter clip backs and the hand engraved serials. So I would say at least going back to the 90s they were seen.

I knew you’d know all we need to know and more. Thanks for your insight!
