I love the Military color. But I’m more of a non-neutral color gal, purple being my favorite. I’d been searching for an xl in purple, but not suede. Not finding a good one that wasn’t outrageous in price, I decided to take a chance with a very ratty one someone had already slapped some nasty blue paint on. This means I got a great deal, but I had yet to try my hand at dying leather. I was definitely taking a chance.

I’m here to confirm that it’s worth taking a gamble and dying your PS1 at home, especially if you find one at a great price. As long as you take the time to go through the proper steps. It is not difficult and the results are wonderful.

I might still put on one more layer of dye, but either way plan to spray a sealant/water repellant on it. I’m absolutely in love with this bag.

Great job. It looks lovely!

Looks great! What dye did you use and what steps did you follow?
Thank you! I prepped the leather with Angeli’s preparer/deglazer. I put on two coats of Feibing’s leather dye in purple. The second coat, though it saturated the leather much better, also left a bizarre patchy golden sheen on parts of the leather. So I cleaned/conditioned it with Cadillac conditioner. Though it took off a bit of dye, it completely removed that weird golden sheen and left it how it looks in the photo. I plan to seal it with Apple guard, though I’m also toying with the idea of first putting a layer of Feibing’s resolene. Bit nervous about that step.

I’m posting before photos. I’ll post after photos tomorrow to show how the water stains came out.

I've heard resolene can make it really shiny. Someone in the Coach rehab club ended up diluting it with conditioner and was happy with the results. Before she used the resolene, the dye wasn't colorfast, even with conditioning.

That’s good to know. The reviews I’ve read are that people love or hate resolene. The ones who love it caution that you have to know how to use it (hence my newbie apprehension). Apparently those who are in the know use resolene 50% diluted with water. That seems in line with what you've read about diluting it, though with conditioner sounds even better.

Deco, how did dyeing affect the softeness of the leather? I love the PS1 leather, how soft and supple it is. How durable is the dye, does it rub off on clothing or chips off anywhere?

The dye has not affected the softness of the leather. After two coats of dye, I cleaned/moisturized the bag with Cadillac moisturizer. I put on a third coat of dye and cleaned/moisturized again after it had dried. My next step will be to put on diluted Resolene, which I understand is the key to preventing dye transfer and rubbing off. I haven't done that step yet, so I will update when that's complete. The color is absolutely gorgeous though. I started out with a pretty ratty bag and am so happy with how the bag looks and feels right now.

I'm glad it worked so well!
