Hi Scarfies!

Any tips for getting your scarves cleaned and not getting the hems flattened? I have an almost new scarf that sadly needs to be cleaned. The last time I sent one off, it came back with hems flat as pancakes, even though I begged them not to press it like that. Do you send yours somewhere special?

In Indiana, unfortunately, so no specialty dry cleaners nearby. But I'm happy to send it away.

I meant country. We have a global membership. There were some recommendations in Hong Kong and I would have one for the UK but US members will have to help you.

A high-end cleaner (that does things like gowns etc) should handle it no problem. They should know not to press the hems, but discuss it specifically. I am in the suburbs of a large city and have a number of cleaners who handle my shawls etc without issue.

Tiecrafters is a great mail-in one in NYC. However — I have washed scarves hundreds of times (yes, literally), and have a yet to have a problem. I just hand washed three twillies tonight and will probably do a couple silk 140s tomorrow. I trust myself more than a dry cleaner, however fancy. There is a thread dedicated to the techniques; it is really not that hard.

Hi Papertiger,

I hope you don't mind me asking but who do you recommend in the UK? I'm currently debating whether to send mine away or dive in with a cool hand wash :confused1:.

If you need a dry cleaners for scarves I can recommend: Mr Steeds https://www.mrsteeds.co.uk

Mr Steeds Dry Cleaning

SW16 6LY
Tel: 0208 677 2374
Fax: 0208 677 6174

ATM, I only use them for mousselines

I actually prefer hand washing for cashmeres and silks (Ecover:https://www.ecover.com/products/laundry/delicate-laundry-liquid/ )

Hi, thanks for info. I'd popped into Hermes in a couple of weeks ago and had enquired about hand washing silk scarves the assistant looked horrified and said it would never feel the same once it had been hand washed, its the first scarf I've needed to get washed after makeup getting on it!!

Hermes used to do a service (£10 a go) but they just sent them to Steeds anyway.

I was anxious at first too, but I actually feel more in control. Please look for our washing scarves threads, you will see most people who regularly wear too. Exceptions are mousselines, they will feel less soft in the hand and will drape differently. I have only washed a Chanel mousseline (bought preloved) because the dry cleaners couldn't get out the previous owner's scent and it was driving me crazy, plus I wear that one so much. I know similar worth, but I care about my H moussies more.

I use a local independent dry cleaner. He cleans all our Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Chanel clothing. he always discusses what cleaning method he recommends. He covers buttons etc too. He cleans my scarves and I ask him not to press the rolled edges, and he doesn't.

Is there anyone similar near you?
