does the vachetta need a "breaking in" period?

i need help with my newly purchased and very first lv. i got the palermo pm and i was wondering if i need to treat the leather to protect from water stains or should i leave it as it is?
it can get rainy here in vancouver in the fall, what to do, what to do?
i don't know if there was a thread about my question, pardon me, i'm a newbie...
