Hello all! My boyfriend will be traveling for work to Rome next month and considering having him purchase a handbag for me as the conversion from Euro to Dollars would be saving me some $$$.

1. does anyone know if he can purchase in store and have them ship to the US?
2. will it be it be vat exempt?
3. Approximate shipping cost?

thanks for all your help in advance!

I did consider that but he will be traveling to Norway after that and not sure what the process would have to be as he won’t be returning to the US right after that.

LV doesn't ship internationally. But Gucci does, if you're interested in buying something and have the store ship it to you. Your boyfriend will just have to carry the bag with him from Rome to Norway. If it's related to tax refund, he'll do it at the airport on the returning flight from Norway to the US. LV uses Global Blue for tax refund process it should be very straight forward across the EU, which simply means dropping off the envelope in the Global Blue mailbox at the airport. Even if he doesn't do the tax refund he/you still save a ton. But he may have to prepare to keep the bag with him in the carryon instead of packing it in checked bag/luggage, in case they ask the see the bag before completing the tax refund process at the airport.

Another tip, have your boyfriend take a picture of the bar code on the tax refund form before sealing & dropping it off in the mailbox so you can track the refund process online.

Great to know! Thanks for all the helpful information. I assume there shouldn’t be an issue with doing the VAT exemption as he will not be returning to the US right after?

It just need to happen at the airport for last flight where he's leaving the EU for good, wherever that'll be. I've purchased a bag in Paris, then flew to Florence and then to Barcelona before returning to the US. I would do the tax refund in Barcelona. Hope this scenario makes more sense. haha

Absolutely! Thanks for that lol. I asked to see if that were to happen where I wouldn’t be able to qualify for it to be VAT exempt and defeat the purpose of the savings.

I just double checked on global blue and it does include Norway so in that case you're good on the vat refund as long as your boyfriend remember to follow through the process at the airport in Norway before returning to the US :)

You can read more about the rules from the link below:

That’s what I found. So was pretty unsure if it would still qualify for the exemption given that it was purchased in Italy.
Technically he's leaving the EU when leaving Italy and he is also a resident of a non EU country. So, getting the refund shouldn't be an issue. Contact global blue and ask to make sure ahead of time!

Did some research on TPF...
Another possibility is to buy from LV online italy, choose the option to pick up in store in Rome and have your bf pick up the item. Put his details in the payment options and the address of the hotel/accomodation where he is staying. The VAT refund will be processed in store and handled as per usual at the airport when he leaves the EU.

Norway isn't part of the EU but I dont know if that makes a difference in this scenario.

It's definitely not part of the EU but Norway also use global blue to process vat refund. I think OP should contact global blue to confirm if her boyfriend should get the form stamped at Rome's airport before leaving to Norway, vs get it stamped in Norway before coming back to the US. I'm certain that he'll get the refund as long as he keep a copy of the document and doc ID for future reference. There's a 3 months window to follow through with any issues.
