I’ve seen a couple of ways to wear a crossbody as a backpack. Does anyone here do that regularly? If so, does it work well for you? And how long does the strap need to be? Any other tips? Because my shoulders increasingly can’t tolerate the weight of carrying a bag by a single strap, I’m thinking of buying a crossbody strap for one of my nice bags specifically for use carrying it as a backpack. But before I splash out the cash for a nice strap, I was curious whether it’s been working for others.

Have you considered a sling bag? There are a number of luxury/designer brands that have sling bags...

By sling bag you mean something like this? https://www.rag-bone.com/womens/han...aMqJnE0CTlQDCcCy49O3Z_ABqXZY7vxwaAvEfEALw_wcB
Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately I think it probably won’t work for me for two reasons: I prefer an E/W shape for both organizational and aesthetic reasons; and a strap worn diagonally across my body with the bag in the back cuts into my chest in a way that’s both uncomfortable and unattractive.

For anyone else with shoulder problems wondering about using a crossbody strap to wear your bag as a backpack: I tried it out with the longest crossbody strap I have already—50”—and if you have narrow shoulders and good shoulder mobility, it could work. For my narrow shoulders and not great mobility, a longer strap, like 60”, will probably be easier to get into and out of. At 5’3” with an average-length torso, the “slide the strap down around your waist and flip the bag back over your head” method did a better job of keeping it higher up on my back instead of my butt while walking, but was a little harder to get into and out of than the “thread the strap through the top handles” method. Finally, the strap adjustment hardware ended up in an uncomfortable spot. So YMMV, but I plan to try this out longer term with a bag that has a fully enclosed top to keep things from falling out, using a 60” nonadjustable strap from an Etsy vendor. I’ll upgrade to a nicer quality strap if it works long run.
