Do you think this needs to be polished?

Obviously this is a magnified photo and I’m sure I notice it 10x more than anyone else casually glancing at it. I don’t intend on ever selling it. At what point do you decide to polish your pieces/send them in? Honest question. What is normal wear and tear and what needs to be addressed? I have little kids and I’m rough on everything. I also believe things should be worn and loved and enjoyed, not put under museum glass.

I don’t normally mind scratches but this is on the nail head. I probably hit it on something. Sigh. Am I overreacting?

If it bothers you enough that you see it and it makes you sad, maybe it's time for a polish (especially if you've have never done one before).

I am pretty rough with my jewelry too, wearing while doing everything, and have gotten decent dings and scratches. But tbh, I'm just too lazy to bring items in for polishing (cleaning once a while is okay) and wear and tear don't bother me.
Honestly, when I get a big scratch or ding, I'm more distracted by how much my wrist/hand hurts from the hit, than my jewelry.

I don't really believe in polishing pieces regularly as part of maintenance. (one because I don't want to remove gold, two because the edges get less sharp over time, and three, again, because I'm lazy) So I've actually never brought my Cartier pieces to be polished before.
Tiffany did it as a complimentary service when they repaired a Tiffany bangle for me, but I didn't ask for it. It was quite an old bangle that I never had any polishing done before, so it didn't bother me when they did it. Probably about time to anyway lol.

I relate and agree with everything you said here haha.

I don’t know if Cartier polishes are usually complimentary but the website says 190 USD and yeah no, I wouldn’t casually bring it in to be polished for almost 200 dollars if I’m being honest. I might only do that if I was handing down my pieces to my daughter and wanted them to look nice or if I felt like a piece looked disfigured and desperately needed it? That’s why I was wondering about the nail head…if it alters the shape of the piece in any way but I don’t think this is severe enough to warrant that.

I was just curious about what other people do, so that’s why I made this post.

Nope. That ding will soften over time.

Polishing removes gold (that is carefully sucked into a receptacle until there is enough to process into something). Scratches, dings are part of a piece's history, imo. When I take my jewelry into the shop for repair (Rolex included) I specify "NO POLISHING".
Agree, it will just get dinged up again. Mine looked like that and I just took a sunshine cloth to it and it went away. Don't have them polish it in store as it will soften the edges too much.

The cost of polish is not worth it. I would wait to get it done until it gets really banged up.

The first scratch always hurts the most.
I am very rough on my juc and it’s my everyday wear but I managed to bang it on the corner of a outdoor cafe table on day 3. Left a big scratch on the head making it go from nail to a screw. I learned to live with it and doesn’t bother me at all anymore. Wear in good health.
