I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in wardrobe, but I figured that my fellow jewelry lovers might understand my dilemma! I've always been matchy but have realized that it might be time to break away from that! My husband bought me a beautiful diamond pendant necklace for Christmas and I've worn it every day since. It is set in white gold, and my favorite pieces of jewelry are also white gold or sterling silver (wedding set, Tiffany bracelet, diamond studs, hoops, etc.). But I have quite a few tops and blazers with gold toned zippers and hardware on them, like these:

I've always matched my jewelry to my clothing hardware, but I don't have as much fine jewelry in yellow gold so I find myself avoiding quite a few items of clothing so I can wear my favorite pieces. Do you mix and match or is that a no-no? Feel free to share pictures if you do! I'm going to play dress up later when I get home and try to convince myself that it's okay! Here are my jewelry staples:

I’ve been pretty much a gold person for a long time. So, my wear-nearly-everyday jewelry is gold, hoop earriings, rings, 1 necklace. I rarely take them off. I’ve added a number of silver or mixed silver/gold pieces that I can add when I have silver bag hardware, silver zipper, etc. Much easier to add a piece or two, than worry about it.

I always used to go back and forth between wearing silver and gold tones. It wasn't until we started ring shopping that I realized that I preferred diamonds to be set in white gold for my engagement ring, so my husband buys me jewelry to match that. Since I wear my wedding set every day, I tend to gravitate toward more white gold/sterling silver now too. I've had a hard time finding mixed silver and gold pieces that I like or are in my price range. I drool over this David Yurman necklace, for example:

If it were in my budget, I'd just buy doubles of everything in white and yellow gold

I know what you mean about finding mixed pieces that you like. I like Lagos, Yurman and some John Hardy. I’ve managed to find some at TJMaxx at affordable prices.
I often just mix/layer solid color items, say 2 silver (or WG), 1 yellow G bracelets, or necklaces.
I also have a 2-tone Michele watch that I throw into the mix.
It’s taken me a few years, but I don’t think much about it anymore. When I want to wear some silver or WG, say a particular piece, I just add another piece to balance it out. Mixing gets easier if that’s what you are going for.
I’ve been gifted a number of silver/WG pieces, even tho I’m a gold person, that I try to wear when I will be in the company of the gifter, so I’ve learned to mix, and found I like it.

I've done some layering in the past but I guess I'll have to practice and get some new pieces for the perfect mix. For me it gets complicated with earrings and necklaces since they're in such close proximity, versus wearing different color bracelets.

Apparently, I never pay attention & clash metal tones like crazy:
goldtone bag hardware/charm, silvertone on shirt, gunmetal on puffer, gold & jade necklace

Ah well. World's still turning.;)

LOL! I love it! I've actually mixed it up a couple times since starting this thread. Mostly my white gold/silver jewelry with shirts that have gold hardware. It's not like anyone pays that much attention (or says anything if they do) so I don't know why I was so worried about it before lol

Yellow gold is my favorite, but lately I have been branching out into white gold as well if I absolutely love the piece, and even find myself pining after silver pieces from Tiffany's. Yellow gold will always be my favorite, (just personal preference), but I have learned not to refuse buying a piece because it isn't my number one choice of metal, which is yellow gold. There are pieces that aren't in yellow gold that still make my heart sing, and so I still end up buying and wearing them anyways.

As far as matching the hardware on my bags and clothing to the metal color of my jewelry goes--I usually don't worry about matching them. I don't want to go nuts over it. Life is too short, so you should always wear the jewelry that you love, even if the particular piece that you love is silver and the hardware on your bag is yellow gold. There's a particular bracelet that I wear every single day in YG and I am not going to take it off just because the hardware of my bag might be silver. I get more wear out of pieces because I don't care about matching the hardware, and as I said before, life is too short. You should always wear the jewelry that you love, regardless of the hardware color of your bag or top.

I prefer to match if possible (mainly jewelry to purse hardware and zippers). If it's a pave item set in silver metal I will wear with gold, because I consider this just "diamond" or "bling" as really you just see the bling and not so much the metal it's set in. I've worn pendants set in white metal on a yellow gold chain. Also my watch is stainless steel but I still wear everyday.
