Do I buy this for my S/O for Christmas?

Figured this might be an ok place to ask. My fiancé can be picky about clothes and is hard to buy for.

I wanted to get him a Barbour Prestbury jacket for Christmas but wasn’t 100% sure so I didn’t buy it. There’s a family owned retailer in the UK that has it for the best price. It’s like $200 cheaper with shipping.

I ended up going to safe route and getting an upgrade from LL Bean to his current black jacket but it’s kind of a boring gift. But now I can’t stop thinking about that Barbour jacket and I kind of want to buy it. I emailed them and they said it’s possible it’ll come by Christmas but it’s really cutting it close.

Do I buy it? Or stick with what I bought?0BEA5ED6-ADD1-415E-B22F-E4F6CF905684.jpeg

I think as long as you think he will like it and the return policy is not a pain to deal with, it doesn't hurt to go for it.

Being shipped a little late happens, and I don't think your SO would be particularly upset if it came late. (or I feel that's not a big deal to make a fuss about.)

If he likes it, then great! Ask him which of the 2 he prefers, and return the other one unless he'd like to keep both.
If he doesn't, then just return it.

If you know it is going to fit, buy the Barbour. You aren’t returning it once you buy it, as shipping to the UK is very expensive.

Has your DH ever owned a waxed jacket before? My DH is British and one of the first things quadruple bagged and thrown out early on in our relationship was his Barbour waxed jacket that smelled like a rancid goat. 🥴 Make sure you have an outdoor shed in which to store it once the wax turns sour.

I forgot to say he has a habit of keeping things he’s gifted and won’t wear. He never returns anything. I am 50/50 on if he’d wear it so that’s partly why I didn’t buy it. That combined with never returning gifts.

Thanks maybe I’ll skip as there’s a 50/50 chance he’d wear it. How soon does it turn sour? Can you fix it?

A Barbour is a forever classic - literally forever, they can be re-waxed by Barbour (or at home) - so if he likes waxed jackets, go for it!
No idea if he likes waxed jackets he wears a black sotfshell all weather jacket 24/7.

DH had it re-waxed and it still came back smelling like a rancid, dead goat. It is only a lifetime item if your farm animals (you own plenty, I assume 😜) smell worse than the jacket and you are immune to the stench. As far as I am concerned, waxed jackets are a no go. YMMV, but you have been warned.

Ha ha ha. I’m so glad I opened this thread.

I’d give him the one you have and show him the one you were thinking of. If he is into it, return and purchase

Waxed jackets are not very pleasant to the touch, they are stiff and that would seem to be very different to the jacket you have upgraded to for him. You could always buy an umbrella to go with that one if it's not waterproof!

Agree with @lill-canele that he may like both!
