Hi everyone,

I have noticed uneven skintone around my lips, its darker there and I believe it has been like this for 2 - 3 years now. Earlier, I thought it will heal by itself but now as I see, its there and is not going at all. I dont know how to upload pics here else I would have shown how different it looks. I can definitely cover it with make up but I was looking for some permanent fix.

I am not sure what to do but its making me look so bad in all my pics.

Anyone, any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi. It's probably melasma. Also known as "mothers' mask" because some women used to get it while pregnant and then it would not go away.

I noticed getting it when I hit about 38 years old and I'm 43 now. Honestly if you go to your plastic surgeon or good facialist that works in a doctor's office, a low intensity photo facial or IPL will help get rid of it for a few months. Then you have to repeat it. My doctors office does around my lips and chin for $150 and doesn't make me get my whole face done which is $400-500.

I also buy 35% glycolic acid from Amazon in the blue and white bottle. It helps quite a lot as well.

Basically it's hormonal.... And hard to get rid of.

I am in my mid late twenties and yet not pregnant. So I dont want it to be melasma or anything that wont go away. I cannot go for facials as my skin is very sensitive and if I go for any such thing, Im sure it will start breaking out. Though, thank you so much, I will research more on what you have told. I have also taken a derma appointment this month end.

If you or anyone knows a natural way to cure mother's mask, please let me know.

There is a cream called Tri-luma made for malasma that is prescription and apparently quite effective. Some may be wary b/c i believe in has hydroquinone in it, but definitely worth looking into.

You can also make your own in a way, with just Retin-A and HQ, and leave the 3rd ingredient out, which i think i read a study say was unnecessary.

Melasma Natural Treatment(Natural Remedies)

1) Lemon Juice
This is considered to be the best way to clear melasma naturally. Regular application of fresh lemon juice on the affected area can gradually disappear those ugly patches. Daily usage of lemon juice has shown considerable amount of improvement in the appearance of skin. With lemon juice, to lighten or fade away melasma is no big deal. Squeezing the lemon on the affected skin area, is the most sought after treatment for melasma.

2) Onion
This is yet another melasma natural treatment that can work wonders to heal this skin condition. First, chop the onion into very small pieces. Make slices of onion and immerse them into vinegar. Now, apply these onion slices dipped in vinegar on the affected skin. Onion juice can also be helpful to eliminate these brown spots.

3) Oil Combination
Both lavender and tea tree oil display skin healing properties and so their mixture can also contribute effectively to treat melasma. Applying a mixture (3-4 times daily) that is made by combining lavender and tea tree oil in equal amounts can also help to lighten melasma. A combination of chamomile and lavender essential oil is yet another effective home remedy for the treatment of melasma.

4) Cucumber
Say goodbye to melasma with cucumber. Use of cucumber juice or cucumber mask has also been helpful in getting rid of melasma. These skin blemishes respond quite well to this natural remedy. Dark spots associated with melasma will soon fade away with regular application of cucumber juice or mask.

5) Turmeric
Use of turmeric also comes in the list of melasma natural cures. A turmeric paste made by mixing lemon juice with turmeric powder, when applied on the affected region is helpful to eliminate melasma. This is because turmeric stops excessive production of melanin, which helps to reduce those brown spots. Once applied, let the paste remain for 10-15 minutes and then wash the affected part with clean water.

Melasma is a temporary skin problem that generally goes away after some time. However, one has to follow any of these treatment options daily to restore healthy look of the skin at the earliest.
