For those who purchase pre- loved bags, would you consider one that’s dirty on the inside? If said dirty bag was purchased, how do you clean it?

I just can’t do it no matter how much the price is.

some bags have linings that can be pulled out and washed....I guess for me it depends on how dirty and what the price is. I have one bag that has ink marks on the lining. the exterior is just about perfect. I basically disinfected the lining with alcohol and when loaded I don't much notice the marks.

Ok ink is one thing but WTF is the stain in the photo and what about odor? Does alcohol get rid of smells like cigarette smoke? Funk?

how do you clean the inside of say vintage coach or dooney with the natural suede/leather inside, no fabric lining?

there are lots of posts on here about odors, etc.
I don't think there is much you can do to get rid of marks/stains on a suede lining
Odor like cigarette smoke might go away if you disinfect and hang out in fresh air. Funk? :) dunno

ALRIGHT

Can you pull out the lining? If so, get a soft laundry brush with some dawn detergent or bar soap (I use Zote, Fels Naptha is also good), wet it, and gently scrub the interior. Be sure to place a towel underneath the lining as you clean it. The red lining will bleed. If enough of the lining is outside, run it under warm water to rinse the soap, squeeze excess water, and place on top of a towel to dry. Anything close to the leather, I’d blot with a warm washcloth. Keep it out to dry. If you’re in a hurry, use a hairdryer on a low-medium setting to dry the lining.

For ink marks, try some Shout! Or Tide. Do an inconspicuous spot of the liking first. There is also a product called Amodex that removes ink stains from leather. I have this in my arsenal, but have not sided it yet, because the consensus seems to be this is useful for recent stains.

For vintage Coach & Dooney with the raw suede lining, you can use the same saddle soap you’re using on the outside of the bag. The raw interior is just as resilient as the outside. Any ink, you won’t be able to get out. and I wouldn’t recommend any modern stain removal products on it.

For smells, definitely cleaning the interior will help. Letting it air dry outside the bag. And adding bounce sheets inside the bag.

Omg you have no idea of the condition of the Flo binocular bag ThredUp sent me. It’s atrocious! Probably worse than that bag in your pic. I can’t pull out the lining to clean it because it’s all stitched. I used a bunch of credits and got it for $16. It’s not worth the slow return either. I don’t even know where to start.

I have a love/hate relationship with ThredUp. For the $16, it’s not worth returning, because their returns are slow through FedEx (over a week), then the time to process it. I just got credited today, from a return that started 11/6.

The outside definitely needs to be cleaned and a bit of reshaping around the edges.I’ll use saddle soap to help with this. But the inside is going to be difficult.

The front loop is tarnished badly. ThredUp thought they were being sneaky and strategically placing the strap over the metal loop.

I love the bag but dagnabit the inside geez…
okay so why does the picture from their site look so damn good? did they show the inside? What is that white coating on the leather on the inside. I’m thinking because it’s black, you will be able to clean it up good since it won’t show water spots. I really like this bag and if you can get thru this project it will be well worth it. Please keep us updated on what u do with it.

I forgot to ask does it smell too?

They take them studio like. It’s awful when you’re trying to look at an item that’s lighter colored though.

The white coating / powder, I have no idea. Whatever fairy dust is spread about their Georgia warehouse I presume. 🥴🥴🥴

ThredUp doesn’t show the inside of purses. Why? Because they’re idiots. That’s the only conclusion I could come up with. Even with Coach bags, you don’t know what you’re getting. Majority of the time, my purchases have been good. Recently I got a vintage XL coach feed sac, and I turned around and returned it. The bag was covered in shoe polish, the tag was split in half and the half was missing, the strap was different colored hardware (nickel) from the hardware on the bag (brass).

Thredup collabs with another website for the high end bags, and those listings have more pix of the inside.

This is a common complaint with customers. It’s why a lot of times, you have to really look at the photos they provide. It’s best on a desktop. And I’ve spotted quite a few Dooney fakes within their listings too.

If you take the time to rehab and clean up a bag, but there are still marks on the inside...
you can buy a purse organizer to cover up the stains and keep your things from
touching the lining. But, first you have to be satisfied that you have thoroughly cleaned
and disinfected the dirty lining.
