Hey everyone! Happy New Year!
I am eyeing atm the ultramatte 30 Montaigne in gray - such a beauty! I am just not sure about the hardware - has any of you experienced any issues with that? I have read that the gold hardware wears somehow better than the ultramatte - is that true?
Another alternative would be the box calfskin in gray, but I have also heard that the leather is very prone to scratches, and I do not feel like babying my bag...
Now when I look at them side by side, I am actually starting to like the look of the box calfskin more...am completely lost.. So your advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks a lot in advance!

I think the 30Montaigne looks better in box calfskin. It gives it a beautiful clean look, although I prefer the strap on the grained calfskin version more because the box version has a strap that shows creases very easily.

Besides the creasing on the strap, which is very normal (and just doesn't show as easily on grained leather), the box calfskin isn't that delicate. It feels like the satin-finish leather on Celine's 16 bag, which has a bit of refinishing to strengthen the surface, or so it seems. With proper care, and careful wear (avoid fingernails touching your bag), your bag won't show scratches that easily. I have my fair share of smooth leather bags and while they can scratch easily, I have generally avoided scratching them, and when I do, I usually can buff them out.

Thank you so much for such a detailed response, that is super helpful!

Hi, just adding my two cents in here that I totally agree with @averagejoe. I've been using my Bobby bag in the same box calfskin leather for a few weeks now with no scratches or damages. Scratching/water damage were my two main concerns/hesitations with buying the bag, and while I haven't used it super extensively yet (thanks covid), anytime I have gone out for an errand or walk I've used it and it still looks pristine. I got caught in a little misting today, and while I quickly hid the bag under my jacket, any water droplets on it just easily wiped right off. I think it's less delicate than people think, just normal conscientiousness and care should do the trick!
