Did you ever feel as if you don't really "spend" the money when buying diamonds?

A friend just said - and he is so right - when I buy the diamonds, the money is not lost. It is there, just transformed into diamonds.

Of course, you would not get the price you paid but still, the value remains.

Do you think that way when buying stones? Or should one better leave these thoughts aside?

btw: I have no kids but I LOVE the idea that my nieces will inherit my jewely one day.

Hmmm....I never thought about it that way, but it's brilliant, actually. I'll definitely be running this idea by dh and hopefully there will be more diamonds in my future! :smile1:

I've never thought of it that way but it IS brilliant!!! (Like I needed another self-enabling tool!) Essentially though it is like you are trading for a commodity and that diamond has a value that never goes down (though maybe not equal to what you paid for if it's branded and you're paying for design of course).

But it is why I can pay for jewelry and NOT spend the big bucks on bags... I just can't stomach paying for something that expensive that deteriorates!! Even cars... I definitely have my limits when it comes to things that don't last forever. Diamonds are very easy to buy in this regard!!!!

I buy MUCH more freely now that I have 2 daughters!!! :) I almost can't wait to give things out to them!

me too me too! What I love the most: my nieces don't have a clue yet, that I am into jewelry.

about cars: not "even", but especially cars! My partner always says, the moment you leave the car dealer with the brand new car, you already lost half the value.

So true. Will never understand cars and bags! Totally respect people's choice to buy them of course, they are pretty! But I just can't...

... diamonds on the other hand! :graucho: ... make me go :woohoo::happydance::woot::woot:

I never feel that spending $ on diamonds is wasted in any way as I know I'll have the pieces forever - and even if I grow out of them, I won't ever sell - I'll put aside for future kids/family inheritances. But I am very aware that the cash is gone - I don't think diamonds should be seen as investment pieces, (i.e., store of wealth) unless they truly are exceptional on a global scale. Unless your jeweler has a buyback program, you'll almost never sell your diamond for as much as you bought it - you pay retail, you'll be offered wholesale for it.

Don't worry about the price value once it's purchased - it's now your sparkles to enjoy!

Diamonds in a sense depreciate too, they are a horrible investment in terms of ROI. But damn are they lovely. I personally think buying them in hopes that they fetch growth in value is silly and misguided. It's nice to buy from a supplier that has an upgrade policy but you still "lose" on them as you never really do get any value increase back in your pocket. Wear them and love them.

I also hope my niece/nephew will inherit. I hope to have some items to allow them to inherit. I already have a will set up. I plan for my sister to inherit if I die before either my niece or nephew is old enough to have. My sister's not had her baby yet, but my SIL has one of each that are older. So I have a "plan". :)

Probably true. But they won't fall apart or go out of style either! I wouldn't buy as an "investment" - but certainly feel like I've bought something that will always have a great deal of value!

I guess it would depend where you bought the stone from too... if you got it wholesale it could possibly fetch you the same price back one day ... my lovely Tiffany's ring will probably never get me my "money back" - but I don't care! :) :p

Very rarely an "investment" unless you are in the catagory of a Duchess of Windsor or Elizabeth Taylor...something unique and rare.
I would be happy to break even, which is unrealistic......LOL!

nice thoughts!

thank you!

I don't see the diamonds as an investment, either.
compared to the erno laszlo cosmetics, which is an investment that doesn't last, they at least last.
as long as I don't lose them! *horror*

I completely agree with your statement. When you wish to sell, you'll never sell your diamonds for as much as you bought it for and to add to that it's also not as easy to sell either. It's not so much as an 'investment' but see it as something that you'll love and enjoy. I know this subforum for for jewelry, but I actually believe that Hermes items, espc Birkin bags, do sell much quicker and easier and retain its value much more than jewelry does. So I never ever feel guilty buying Hermes. As for jewelry, anytime I want to sell, its also less than what I bought it for. But I still believe that still better to spend $ on diamonds, watches, and H, rather than cars.
