Did anyone in Australia buy their Hermes from abroad? Did you have any problem with the custom? Did you have to pay for the duty?? Do they ask us to provide anything? Do they know the actual value of the bag:confused1:? What if the seller send it as a gift ?? Any advice to avoid custom charge ?
Thanxx!!!

I talked to an Australian friend about this recently, and they said that if they're already traveling, they go ahead and buy and pay the duty. If they're wanting to travel with the intent to shop, they just buy it there because the travel costs are so high, and the decreased AUD doesn't help you get a bargain.

I'm assuming you're asking from the point of view of buying overseas and shipping it to Australia? If you are, there is a A$1000 limit on goods purchased online that you can bring into Australia without needing to have duty paid. Customs will look at the value of the goods declared on the parcel - so maybe your best bet is to have the seller under-declare but then you have issues with insurance.

I bought a vintage croc from Germany and i was freaking out about how much the import duty would cost, but I was very lucky as my parcel was not opened. Then I bought a bag at auction from New Zealand and it come via DHL and I was slugged for duty, GST on importation, Australian Govt charges and disbursement fee. A total of AU$784.00. In my opinion i think when bags are shipped via US post it is the luck of the draw on whether your parcel even gets looked at but with a courier company it seems to be a matter of course. I hope this helps.

Right now because of the exchange rate you are probably better off to buy in store! Especially if it's a larger item, ie 10,000+, you can plan your purchase to coincide with an o/s trip and get a 10% rebate, which actually works out cheaper than buying off ebay or overseas!

If you do buy your bag while overseas, is it possible to just carry it like an old bag you already had? Either in your luggage or as carry on. Hence avoiding the added tax? Or will they search you for the receipts? :(

If you're worried they'll search you for receipts, then just mail the receipts home and carrying the bag without any receipts.

But I'm sure the smell of the new Hermes bag will give it away!!

If it is arround 12 - 13k ( AUD) for a birkin in Australia Then obviously, it is cheaper than buying over net ( oversea websites, ebay) . But there is no birkin at melbourne store at the moment :(. But I want a birkin right now :(............
