I am just about ready to buy the diamond studs I have been saving for now and will be ordering them next week from a jeweller here in the UK. I have decided to go with 1 carat tcw (0.50 in each ear) as they are such a perfect size for everyday and buy diamond stud jackets separately to wear with the studs when I want a bit more bling during the day or for nights out.

Here is a link to the jackets that I want to order - 18k white gold, VS clarity, F/G colour and 0.42 tcw:

I looked for similar here in the UK but the selection is not only really poor but also very expensive for the sort of quality you get.

I just wanted to find out if anyone else on here has diamond jackets (or any other jewellery even) from Brian Gavin and can give me their personal opinions on the brand and the quality of their diamonds? I have heard good things about them (am sure I have also seen Ame recommending them here on TPF) but have never ordered jewellery from abroad before so am a little nervous!

One last question - does it matter if the clarity of the diamond studs and the jackets are slightly different? The colour will be the same - F - but the clarity will be SI for the studs as opposed to VS for the jackets. The studs are ideal cut.

BGD specifically use higher clarity melee than average (meaning VS vs SI) on pieces like this unless you specifically request otherwise, iirc. You're not going to see the difference with the naked eye, and I personally prefer higher clarity melee since they're smaller stones overall and any inclusions relative to the size could inhibit light return in a different way than the same kind of inclusion would in a larger stone.

As far as this piece in specific--just make sure your dimensions on your studs work with the diameter needed on the jackets. I believe those should work but double check.

Thanks Ame, that's really helpful :smile1: As far as the dimensions of the studs are concerned I can use either 3 prong martini or 4 prong basket set studs with these jackets so should be fine as I will most likely go with 4 prong basket set ones. These jackets also allow for a 0.50 ct centre stone so with 1 carat tcw studs I should be ok.

I would get martini over 4 prong, personally. I think they look nicer, and let more of the stone show and sit flatter to the ear.

I see what you mean about showing more of the stone but to my eyes they look a bit triangular with the 3 prongs! I think I might prefer the shape of the stone as it looks in the four prong setting.

I have 4 prong martinis, so they do make them and they do look round. As AME posted you do get better light saturation because not as much metal is used on the undercarriage.
I love this idea...2 different looks!!!
Plz post pics..........................................................

Thanks! I'm so excited - will definitely post pics when they arrive! :yahoo: That's useful to know that martinis can also be four prong too, I will look into it.

OBTM, these are the ones I have been looking at for my studs -

I have also been getting quotes from places in the UK

They are lovely DP! I will take a look at the site as well. Are these for your existing studs or are you planning to get new ones?

I've decided that I am definitely going to make my existing half carat studs into a three stone DBTY necklace in white gold too as have another 0.25 diamond I want to use.

I want to have some made for my existing 1carat studs in this style. I don't want to go bigger with my studs as I personally think bigger stones in my ears look fake but the jackets will give them the "bling" I want.

I'm having the diamonds from my nannie's four diamond stone ring which she gave me for my 21st made in to a DBTY bracelet and a one stone DBTY necklace.

I'm looking forward to seeing pics of yours :smile1:

I agree about the size - 1 carat is a perfect size for everyday in my opinion and jackets allow that dressier option if you want a bit more bling.

Your DBTY bracelet and necklace sound like they will be gorgeous! So special too as the stones will come from your nan's gift :smile1:

I still need to get a quote for my little DBTY project, will wait until after I get my studs and jackets. I was originally going to have it done in rose gold (which I adore) but I think it might be more classic in the long run in either yellow or white gold.
