So I found this ring...here are the specs:

1.38 Ct centre stone round brilliant....with one small bagget on either side.

Stone is a firm I colour, SI1/SI2 border line.... Baggets are about 0.14 each with same colour, but VS2.

The cut is "medium".... I think it's a shallow cut...

It's set on platinum. It's an estate ring, selling for $4000 CAD...

It's pretty much ready to wear, all you need to do is get it re-polished.

I think this is a good deal? What do you girls think?

$4000 CAD is equal to 3,630.02 USD ?

The difference between an SI1 and SI2 could be $600-800ish at that carat weight, does it have a cert with it?
If the cut is good, that would be a great price.

Yup.... $3600ish is close enough.... It doesn't have a cert with it, just an appraisal by an independent jewler.....noting the specs above...... The cut is label on the appraisal as "medium" whatever that means? Worst case it's SI2.... is it still worth it?

Note: Seller said it was I to J, SI1, but when appraised by intependent store, it was noted as I colour and SI2.....

I personally wouldn't spend that much money on an uncertified diamond. But if it's something you really love, can you take it to an appraiser of your own before you commit to the purchase?

neverenoughbags- Yep that is a very good price. Good for you for taking it to another appraiser.

The rap price difference between I-J is only a couple hundred at that carat weight and a J can easily face up much whiter (since diamonds are actually graded upside down or "face down").

The 'medium' probably refers to the girdle thickness.

I also think "medium" is refering to the girdle. You might want to find out the how the cut is on the stone as well. But judging by the initial specs and since it's set in Platinum, seems like a good deal.

Hum...let me grab the document that the appraiser gave me and see what the medium refers to...I thought it was cut...but could be wrong..... will let you all know...

Edit: I just checked....it is refering to "CUT"..... does that mean it's bad..? It's really nice looking....

I think it's fair. I don't think it's the bargain of the century but I think its not 'out of touch'.

I think what matters equally than value for C$ is if you like the setting/stones.

True you can always have the stones re-set but all in all I think even colour of diamonds can be personal (I don't mind 'greyish' but not 'yellowish' er I don't mean fancy colours obviously).

If you like the stones - most important. If you like the setting too - bonus.

how does it look to you? I wouldn't probably bother investing in a "medium" cut to be honest. I'd rather go a little smaller and get a better cut.
