Hello! I posted here a few months ago looking for engagement ring metal experiences and got great advice about platinum, but a ring is still quite a ways away. I have been looking anyway, of course - I can't help it!

So here's my question: Did the diamond in your e-ring come with a grading report? And if it did, was it something that you wanted, something your man wanted, or something that just happened to be included?

Most of the sparkly ones I've been seeing come with certs, but not all. Is one better than the others?

We picked the stone first, then the setting. If it wasn't certified by a good lab (GIA, AGS, EGL-USA) it didn't get looked at. We set our parameters and checked them out and confirmed each cert was accurate and had the stone appraised by someone NOT in a jewelry store, completely independent appraisal, and if that was good, we were happy.

My ring is from Tiffany's so it came with their paperwork. I would not have been comfortable buying a ring without paperwork if it was a new ring. I did however look at a lot of antique rings that came without paperwork; in that case I would have been OK buying without certs from a reputable seller, or having a ring appraised in the setting by an independent jeweler (not the seller) if I didn't know/trust the seller. With antique rings the stones generally do not come with paperwork. My fiancé and I both wanted paperwork because that's how you know what you're getting.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm definitely telling my man get a grading report with my diamond... it really does seem like a smart thing to have. I want him to know exactly what he's getting.

And GIA seems like the way to go. I checked out their website, and I like that they're the original. They've also graded a lot of really famous stones, like the Hope Diamond. I'm sold!

Absolutely get a grading report! And I agree that GIA and AGS are the way to go, high end jewelry stores automatically provide certification of the gems.

My diamond came with an AGS cert, but I also took it to an appraiser (he does GIA and AGS). I really liked looking at my diamond through all of his equipment.
