Diamond prices set to tumble

Thanks! That was interesting esp. the marketing aspect. They have good reason to worry - diamonds/jewelry has always brought quick cash.
I have seen so many "discrete" type of ads soliciting "unwanted" stones.

What an interesting article! Thanks. It will be interesting to see what happens. I personally wouldn't mind if the prices came crashing down - I would love to take advantage of that :graucho:

hmmm i hope they dont go down too much. although i would love a bigger stone and to buy more diamonds, i dont want the one i have right now to loose value either.....

I love my diamonds. I would not give them up. I am going to keep an eye out for the lower prices and take advantage of them if I can. I am still sure that this financial crisis is not going to last forever, not like the diamonds do.

I can't imagine the price being dramatically reduced. A 2 carat stone might go for $16,000 instead of $20,000, which might not be such a big deal for consumers, but it would certainly hurt DeBeers.

This sounds weird, but I was at Costco with my father and I swung by the jewelry case and was SO surprised at how cheaply you can buy 1.5 carats with good specs (VS1 + F in color for like, $4400!)... Likewise, Tiffany had GORGEOUS rings in their "under $10,000" case.

I hope prices go down a little. I would like to get engaged in the next couple of years, and my SO really wants to get me a nice ring (he doesn't know anyone with a ring smaller than 2 carats, minus other grad students) if he proposes.

I hope they do come down! The run up in pricing since we got mine has been ridiculous. I'd also like to see insurance to cover them go down. Didn't buy stones as an investment & they've become that. But will not sell.
I'm holding out buying anything for now.

It seemed like it was poised to go down but -- my jeweler said that there was no movement on the rapaport. Anyone have news about that? Thanks.

On the Rapaport report issued on 1/30, it did show some price decreases.
For example,
1.00ct D-IF round brilliant cut diamond: US$23,500 --> US$23,100
10.00ct D-IF round brilliant cut diamond: US$1908,000 --> US$1851,000

No further movement since then.
