I'm a male who is new to the world of luxury bags. Which designers would you guys and gals recommend for someone who is completely new to this whole world? My dream bag is the Celine Luggage Tote. But I feel I need to take baby steps. Thanks in advance :D

I think of 2 "G's" when it comes to Great Guy bags: Goyard and Givenchy. I'm sure there are plenty more! Have fun exploring! Just go to a department store and see what you like.

I have a Celine phantom tote and it's too heavy. You should definitely go try some on at a dept store. What kind of bags do you like? Only totes? How about crossbody and satchels?

When I was a designer bag virgin like you, and somewhat wary of plunking down 1-2 K on "just a bag" :Dwhat I did was spent a few long and fun Saturdays roaming good consignment shops, trying out every purse of every model, brand and make, putting my stuff inside, modelling each in front of a mirror and taking pics for reference... I always took a checklist with all my purse requirements (size, material, max weight, minimum compartments, fits laptop or not, goes over shoulder/crossbody - took along my staple coats and jackets to try on with each purse, too) and a pencil and paper for extra observations. I learned a LOT hands on, no pressure from the SA but plenty of good advise, and best of all I got to see how a 2-5 K bag looks really after a few years of use. Only when I was sure what would work for me did I head to the boutique.

Might this be a possible way to try for yourself? :smile1:

I had Celine phantom and sold it because it was super heavy. U should def try the luggage in person. I like the pouch look on guys so I would say goyard. Can you give idea of what ur budget is and what other bags ur interested in. For example logo vs leather etc

My budget right now is tight (Student). So, I would say somewhere inbetween Michael Kors, Henri Bendel and Dooney. That price range seems good for me at this particular moment in my life. But the thing is I know nothing about these brands. I love the structered bags. Bags that are usually geared toward men are uninspired I tend to not be as drawn to them.

I suggest getting a pre-owned luxury bag from a premium designer. Some brands don't have a high resale value on Ebay so you can get older styles from brands like Gucci and Prada for around the same price that you would pay for a Michael Kors bag.

Be sure to get it authenticated in the appropriate thread here first, before you pay for it. The online resale market is rife with fakes.

There are some wonderful men's bags now from Givenchy and Fendi which are not "uninspired" anymore. They are sometimes based on the women's version of the bag, but made to be larger and/or less decorated.

Thank you, AverageJoe

DEFINITELY Dooney!! higher quality than comparable brands...and many luxury brands too.

I suggest thinking a little outside the box. There are many high-end brands that are a little less popular than the most well-known brands, but are still fabulous. I also second the eBay/pre-loved suggestion. Some ideas--Mark Cross, Proenza Schouler (you might like the PS11), Marni, Tom Ford, and Nina Ricci.

Good luck!
