One of the prongs on my engagement ring is now bent/dented, and the diamond rotates slightly in the setting. I think this happened while I was petting a friend's puppy last week and the dog bit down and around the ring basket. I literally had to pry its mouth off of my ring. I immediately noticed the dents and loose stone after that.

I've contacted Jewelers Mutual and they've given me the OK to have it repaired by the jeweler who made the setting. I have to ship it to him. How should I ship the ring? I've heard that USPS Registered Mail is the safest and cheapest, but that it takes a long time. I would need to insure the ring for shipping.

Also, has anyone had to make a claim through Jewelers Mutual? Their customer service seems great so far, but I've had terrible experiences with insurers in the past.

Check with the jeweler to find out how they require you send it in, that would be first and foremost. The value of the ring and stone will likely dictate that.

Usually most require Registered Mail Insured with few exceptions. Part of that is because of the amount the USPS will allow you to insure for, and the other is because it's under lock and key and signed for, and if it goes missing it's a felony. OR the jeweler might require that it go as a FedEx Overnight through their account on their insurance in some cases. I might insist on the latter just for security.

Agreed. The value of the ring will be the factor on how to send. Over a certain amount {I think $50k?} Brinks usually handles it.

We went with USPS Registered Mail which insures up to $25K. The ring is supposed to be in New York but it's "Out for Delivery" in Houston. WTF.

:amazed::search: That...is weird.

It was mailed 2-day priority Registered Mail and should've arrived in NY yesterday. DH called USPS today and they didn't have an answer. The ring is still "Out for Delivery" in Houston... since 8:30am yesterday. No updates since then. We do know that it has not made it to NY yet. I'm trying to NOT freak out but I am completely freaking out.

Any updates?
Their tracking is atrocious, so don't truly panic yet. I have never had a Registered Mail package actually go Priority, so I am surprised they sold you truly Priority Registered.

It finally made it... 2 days late. I was sweating bullets!

For registered that's on time. I am surprised they even allowed "priority" but I am so glad it arrived!

I was surprised about the "priority" option and the total was only $52.40. When we had the stone set in New York after purchasing it in Houston, I remember paying around $150 for shipping (I think). This is how it's listed on my USPS receipt:

Zone-6
Priority Mail 2 Day By
Weight $9.75
Registered
Insured Value XX,XXX.XX $42.65
