If you were having a halo ring made and you liked a version made by a designer would you take a picture to your jeweler or would you feel like you were having a "copy" made? And with so many of the rings being so similar (simple solitaires with circles of diamonds around them) if the result looked almost exactly like the example you showed them would you feel like you had a knock-off? I'm just worried about the result looking too much like the "inspiration" but I'm also not sure there's anything so creative about the "originals" I like, just a nice way to set the diamond I have... sorry for the ramble - what do you think? Here's a link to the one I like as a starting point (but my center stone would be 1.5 carats so it would fill the circle) ... https://fr.boucheron.com/bague/bague-ava-0-25-carat,15286.html

IMHO, I would not want a ring that looks very similar to a designer's piece. To me, it would be like buying the Cartier's love bracelet nailhead design from a small jewelry store. I would go to a few local jewelers and see their halo designs. See if one sparks your interest, and then take it from there. Maybe you will see something you like a lot more.

i guess it's how you feel about it--and it seems like you wouldn't feel right about copying a designer piece. however, imho, i think it's totally OK to pick whatever you like and then have it custom made (copied, what have you) as it'll save a lot of money and it'll still look as gorgeous

If it was made to my specifications, I would not feel like it was a knockoff. Aside from the Legacy, which is the main stone that is the draw, I don't feel like anything any designer does is specifically theirs. But there's not a designer piece that I love 100% either.

It's difficult to pinpoint and "patent" a particular design. One tiny change and it's a "new" design.

If you love a design, I wouldn't hesitate to show it to your local jeweller to see if something similar can be hand-made. There's nothing like a custom-made piece created to your specifications. :smile1:

I had a loose diamond and I took it to my jeweler with lots of notes, my own sketches on, and a scrapbook ful of pics I liked, I was in contact with him almost everyday, so it is a unique and beautiful ring, custom made for my taste and pleasure. I did get inspiration from branded and non branded rings. I never felt I was copying someone.

When you browse Vogue for instance and you get a new idea a bout clothes do you feel you are "copying" the designers and creating knock offs?? I don't think so!
