Hi everyone,

I posted about a month ago that I recently purchased one of my dream bags the petite malle. I went to gather all my other bags to take a group pic and discovered cracks in the canvas of my 2009 Bloomsbury PM. I tried searching online for records of a recall of this design and found nothing. This bag was my first LV my mom bought for me as a gift for my 18th birthday. I would prefer not to part ways with is but to be honest I have not worn it out in the past 3-4 years. I don't have concerns this will happen to my other pieces because the designs are quite different and should show wear and tear better than this style (monogram locky bb, alma bb empriente, monogram petite malle) but still it makes me hesitant to purchase canvas again! I even debated whether I should return my petite malle while I still can.

I brought it into LV and the SA took it to the repair specialist to take a look in the back, their response was that it's normal wear and tear due to the bag's age (12 years) and probably from a dry environment. I thought that was fair as I've heard their unofficial policy is to only guarantee bags within 1-5 years of purchase. I just had some hope by a long shot that if it was logged as a defective design they might offer to repair it with a fee.

So LV was a bust, next try was a local cobbler that repairs shoes and handbags. I brought it in to be evaluated and right away his response was that there's nothing he can do about cracked canvas and that it was my fault for not conditioning it every 6 months with a leather conditioner and using it as an everyday bag. My heart just sank, but assumed he was right since LV also said cracking is caused by dry weather. Then while researching online again I saw that most customers don't condition their canvas bags since the coating is basically waterproof and no conditioner will permeate the surface and could even damage the bag. In the end he advised against doing any kind of repair outside of LV because they use specific equipment and materials on their bags, anyone else claiming they can repair it may just damage it further.

Anyways, I'm now confused...I submitted photos to Fashionphile and they're offering $550 as a quote. If I try and send the bag to a handbag repairman who is popular on youtube for doing non-conventional LV repairs (Bedo's Leatherworks) I will likely have to pay anywhere between $200-400 and also lose any resale value due to altering the original design but I might be able to get some more use out of the bag.

This video shows the same style bag getting repaired for the same issue.

What would you do??? Do you keep any sentimental bags that you don't use or have retired due to damage, or would you rather sell them off to recoup the money. Do you have any repair nightmare stories?

If it were me, I would probably keep it for sentimental reasons (first LV, gift from mom). I'm not sure I'd send it off for a repair that involves cutting away part of the top edge. I would probably just leave it and maybe see what glue is available to dab on the cracks to keep them from getting worse. Though if you don't think you'd ever use it again, then $550 isn't a bad price for a 12 year old bag.

I would sell it and put the money towards a new bag. You could create a new memory and go shopping with your mom for the new bag! You will always have your memories of receiving it and photographs of yourself using it (hopefully). It sounds like it’s the sentiment attached to this bag that makes it special and not the material item itself.

Why would you sell a bag your mother gave you for your 18th birthday? The bag is fine! A few cracks are normal. Unless you are looking for them, the cracks are not noticeable in the 2nd photo.

I agree! But I’ve seen photos of bags online that have far worse cracks...I am worried if I keep using it the cracks will eventually look like this: 06F8CF7F-97EC-4D49-B826-AD63D102CA3A.png

Sounds like you’re pretty worried about it cracking fuether. I’d sell it if I were you and put the money towards another bag or perhaps a piece of jewelry.

It sucks we have to deal with cracking of canvas

I’m sorry this has happened to your bag. I would keep it, for sentimental reasons. I’m not sure why a cobbler would tell you you should’ve used leather conditioner on a canvas bag. :hrmm: I don’t think it looks too bad, hopefully it won’t get worse. Maybe it’s the shape of the bag that causes this over time? I’ve seen cracks happen with bags with flap closures.

I would keep it. The bag is still in usable condition. I don't think it will keep cracking if you maybe store it differently or just use it more. A cobbler could try to seal those cracks so they are less visible and don't keep spreading. I have never conditioned canvas. I clean it but not condition it. I only condition leather.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I did try and get more quotes for a repair but I am hesitant to go through with it and end up with a botched bag. I have decided to sell it to Fashionphile for the $550, sad to see it go but I'm sure I will shop at LV with my mom again in the future! (turning 30 this year :hbeat:)
I was going to advise selling. I'm sure the bag isn't the only item you cherish from your mom. $550 for a damaged bag is not too bad.

You did the right thing. $550 for a damaged bag is amazing. I honestly wonder who buys the cracked bags. They have a couple on their site that have been marked down.

I got $700 from FP a couple years ago and my Bloomsbury PM was in like new condition and the newer model. I sold mine because I had seen bags on eBay with the cracking issue and I wanted to get rid of mine before it could possibly happen.
