I have auburn hair (not natural but my skintone is that of a redhead - pale with freckels)
I wear mostly black, blue or purple/plum. I can wear teal but not grass green. No yellow. No rust. I do better with contrast to my hair - not matching it.

I can wear dark grey - almost black. Looking online at a light to medium grey top. Not sure it that will wash me out. anyone here with skin like mine? can you wear grey?

I don't have auburn hair but highlighted hair, with a very fair complexion.
Grey is not a flattering color for me.
I wear mostly blacks, navy, chocolate, red, hunter green, cognac, butterscotch & those tones very well,
plums, aubergines, mustard, winter whites & taupe shades also work well for me
Think you have to mix it up a little bit & experiment & one of the best ways I have found is with
a shawl, that is if you wear shawls, JMO

What suits us (fellow redhead, but light) is dependent on skin-tone not hair. I am a slightly warm-leaning neutral (peach undertones). apparently I'm a Spring/or bright light & warm depending on which system people follow. There are some redheads that have no-to-little yellow in their colouring (would be designated as a 'Summer' in the 4 or 12 season system) and suit mostly pinks, purples, cool greens and most not-too-bright blues. They can usually tolerate grey, so long as it's cool (on the blue side). If you tolerate brighter, stronger, more contrasting colours (sounds like it if you look good in black) then light grey (steel, silver, pewter) is OK if it's shiny and solid, not usually if it's matte, cloudy or heathery.

I haven't had my colors done but I think I'm cool or neutral. I don't look good in pastels. Jewel tones or black is better for me.
This is the top....kinda medium grey from what I can tell. Probably not as good as the deep blue one I have in the same style but maybe OK

You sound like you may be a Winter. If you already know which colors look good on you, that's great.

This top is more of what people term as a 'Summer' grey in terms of value and contrast, but it's quite neutral in terms of chroma. Everyone should be able to get away with a neutral grey - just style it your way.

Grey is a neutral colour but it can wash-out people that need a strong contrast or bold colours (which is why you're asking I am guessing). Just add something in your normal colour palate and you'll be good to go. The top will take a back seat and your naturally good colors will star.

If going monotone, my advice is to load up with a lot or statement silver jewellery and either add a darker grey scarf (to pick-up on the embroidery) or something lighter and silk-satin, and wear darker jeans or pants/trous. Bringing out all the textures on the top. If you want to be an adventuress, you can mix with other Winter neutrals like cool taupes, ebony, white, and cool beige this Summer (this season/time of year not the colour palette). Apart from white, all those colours have grey in them. The colours will work like a rocky landscape or a stoney beach.

I don't wear scarves...I would wear the top with dark jeans...I thought about adding some colorful earrings - turquoise maybe - but don't know if that would make much difference....I was looking at my wardrobe. I have a few darker grey tops which are ok for me and one top that is a print - lighter grey with black

A bright lipstick in a flattering tone for your skin tone would make this neutral grey works for you.
I prefer pink but if you like red, it would also do the job very nicely.

The colour analysis subreddit is super active with lots of people posting their thoughts and opinions about what colours work for them or other people or various celebrities: https://www.reddit.com/r/coloranalysis

If you browse through it you'll come across the redhead posts with colour swatches/drapes for comparison and lots of feedback and discussion about what works. But yeah, it's not just hair colour alone that determines what clothing/makeup colours will give you the result you might be happiest with, and ultimately you just get to choose which colours make you feel your best anyway.

Agree with papertiger that it’s more about skin tone than hair color. I’m a natural redhead with pretty pale pinky skin, and I do wear rust and gray, though certainly not all shades of gray. Like you, I stay away from grass green and many yellows. And pretty much never brown, at least for a top or a dress, though I love it in handbags.

I think the suggestions about combining the top with another gray and/or statement pieces or things that will highlight its texture sound really fun.

I ordered the grey top...will see how it works
I also picked up a lighter brown tee yesterday....kind of a milk chocolate color....a trial - may be ok for me if not as good as blue and black...something different
