Christina Zeller, former Creative Director of Delvaux, and Damian O’Sullivan, experienced designer for many fashion houses such as Delvaux, Hermès and Louis Vuitton, have jointly launched a new handbag brand named Damiaan. Based in Belgium, with production in France and Italy, the brand has two models, the Snakebag and the Bootbag, with a pochette scheduled for release later this year. So far the bags are available only online.

You can see them on Instagram or on their website https://www.damiaan.co

This week I spent a very pleasant morning in a leafy Paris garden with Christina and Damian over a cup of tea and pastries, discussing handbags, design, travel, and life in general. The designers are targeting a certain type of client who is self-assured enough to carry a bag that speaks to his/her personal aesthetic, rather than a mass-market luxury brand.

The two models have a surrealistic, whimsical touch, typical of Belgian design. I was privileged enough to purchase the Snakebag in person, size small, in light navy blue with pearly gray 3-D “snake” handles. The bag, made of top-quality calfskin, has double zip pulls, is lined in cotton fabric with an interior slip pocket and key ring, and a detachable, adjustable strap to be worn cross-body or on the shoulder. It comes in 5 colour combinations, and 2 sizes. The Bootbag is a tote, available in 5 colour-ways and 2 sizes, with a trompe l’oeil boot seen in profile, a detachable, adjustable strap, and some interesting colour and texture combinations.

It was exciting to experience the launch of a new endeavour first-hand, and I wish much success to these two well-known designers for their Damiaan brand.

Loving the Snake bags, but I would have liked to have seen the insides (grey cotton-lined).

Also, noted, the "Burgundy" colour on the Small Snake looks very different stock pick v mod pic. I'm not sure if I would buy a bag that I wasn't sure whether it would tern-up brown with a green snake or red with a brown snake.

I hope they will be available to a UK dept store soon (we have to add 20%). Dept stores all seem to stock the same, same ol' same ol' bags.

That's a big difference wow

I also am curious about the linings, I have noticed a number of handbags from different brands lately have very sloppy linings/stiches/seams inside their bags

Looks like an odd cheap mashup of Bvlgari and lv alma bag.

There are dome bags with the lines of most brands, but the Alma, the H Bolide and the Gucci 1955 dome bag are all serious bags, beautifully made, and we don't know about these (yet). They're certainly not in line with contemporary prices, and I think that will be a problem for them. They are with the serious money, heritage/high-end designer brand bags. For that money, someone could buy a Saint Laurent Lou Lou or a Gucci Marmont or one of the Small all-leather Blondies.

I think perhaps the snake is a bit too literal. The black-on-black has 'something' though. The boot - I'm not sure I get at all. For that money, wit or no wit, I still want a serious bag. The Bvlgari Serpenti were originally very bejewelled, opulent, desirable objects just to look at, now even some of Bvlgari's latest offerings look more like Game of the Thrones merch and some of LVs collabs look their target market have 8-12 y o in mind. :dog:

I would love to a new company do well, especially a Belgium, Made in France one, and I'd like to see these IRL.

Agree completely especially on the price point!
And let me not get started on Bvlgari

While I'm excited to see Christina design bags again, I find these a bit less refined than I was hoping. The idea of the snake handle is fun but the execution is really a bit comical and not what I was expecting.

When it comes to snake themed bags, the young artisan "gungun leather crafts" takes the cake in my book. Watching her hand carve the snake fastener from 7:30 mins onwards is incredibly satisfying.

The bag Looks a bit too Kelly like but that snake was done so well

I suppose I should have opted to post a fully original design but she had no videos of crafting one. :giggle:
Very interesting design; I was wondering about the other video on her channel where she shows more in depth about crafting the snake, how the wear and tear of the delicate snakeskin would be affected by opening/closing the flap. And if the scales of the snakeskin would chafe at the smoother boxlike leather ?
Also since it was glued together, how would that hold up to living in a very sunny or hot/humid climate where glues tend to break down easily.
