To be honest I personally don't care much about my handbag type or purse with my body type, well after all I only have few handbags for my office and travelling. But for men, like me the model is somehow standard. But when it comes to women, hmmmm, you bet they will think twice before they purchase and wear them, Right?

So I jot around and found this nice article, that might be useful for you.

Believe it or not trying on a purse is just as important as trying on clothes. Even though a purse is just an accessory, wearing the wrong style, size or shape can really ruin your look. The part of the body that the handbag rests on will be the part of the body that the eye will be drawn to. The right choice of handbag can actually accentuate your positive attributes. Before you order one of the seasons hot, new bags, learn how to choose the right bag for your body type.

Things to consider before purchasing a purse online

If you are slim and tall -
You are lucky! Being tall and slim allows you to get away with most purse styles. Oversize bags, shoulder bags and clutch bags will all look great. The only thing you really need to watch is the size of the handbag you choose. Small bags should be avoided as they will make you look bigger. Mid size, large, floppy or bulky handbags are best. Bright colors, prints and patterns are okay, too.

If you are short and petite

The most important thing to watch for as a petite girl is the size of the bag you choose. A good rule of thumb is to remember proportion. Small bags work well for small girls. Choose small bags and wear them close to your body.

If your hips are large -

If you wish to draw attention away from the hip area try a shoulder bag. Choose one with a short strap. The purse can be tucked easily under the arm. The best look for you is a shoulder bag or a hobo bag that hangs slightly but ends well above the hip line.

If you are top heavy -

If you are generously endowed on the upper half of your body you will probably want to draw attention away from your bosom or waist. A messenger bag or a handbag is a good choice for your body type. If you really want a shoulder bag try one that has a long strap and is fairly large in size.

If you have great curves -

A shoulder bag that ends just above the waist is the most flattering style for you. The only type of bags that you will want to avoid are ones that are either really big or really small.

If you are a plus size -

Any style of bag that is wider in width like a Hobo bag suit you best. Stay away from bags that are small. A small bag will make you look larger. Go for bags with short to medium length straps.

Well, hope that's useful.

It's funny, before I found tPF it never occurred me to think of my handbag choices in terms of my height/build. I always select bags that fit my lifestyle. If my body type dictated huge handbags, then I'll just have to look wrong because I have no use for a gigantic bag. On the other end of the spectrum, I couldn't use a Chanel Flap, even a jumbo, because my things wouldn't quite fit in it.

To each his/her own I guess.

I like big bags too and I am 5'2. I find that personally I love big shoulder bags on me but when it comes to handheld I like it a little smaller. I bought the LV speedy 30 but I kind of think it looks too big on me so I then I got the Speedy 25 and I think it looks a lot better on me.

I'm with ally24k here! I'm short (5ft 3in), but I LOVE my big bags. I wouldn't wear a pochette to save my life! Maybe only for really formal outings, and it'd have to be a Hermes Kelly Elan clutch :sweatdrop:, preferably in croc LOL.

Great post. I totally agree with everything said on that article. I'm under the "short" heading and I stay away from oversized bags as they really look weird on me. No offense to anyone but I've seen plus-sized women carrying very small demi bags under their arms and somehow, it doesn't look right. Proportion is really a key factor to consider when choosing the right bag.

Yeah, it doesn't completely make sense. It's not just an ornament. I may be small, but I still have to haul around a laptop, files, umbrella, snacks etc. just like everybody else.

But I am aware of the look, and it's true that I always tend to carry a bag that's just big enough (with a bit to spare) for my needs at the time. I have and use lots of different sizes.

My gripe with this whole idea is that a handbag is first and foremost a functional item, meaning we need them to carry our wallets, phones, etc in them. The whole sizing issue just doesn't apply with handbags for that very reason. Certainly with clothing items, size and proportion definitely are an issue. A short, slim woman looks silly in an ankle length prairie skirt, but can really rock out an above the knee pencil skirt. The same body type looks great in a baby doll dress, but someone with a more womanly shape would look 6 months preggers in a baby doll dress.

I suppose if you want to make a really silly analogy, men carry their belongings in their pants pockets. Are men's pants designed with small pockets for short inseams and large pockets for tall inseams? Don't think so. The pockets are a functional addition to men's pants, just like handbags are for women.

Interesting article. I have to say from personal experience though, messenger bags (or anything cross-body) are NOT good for women who are top-heavy. The boobies :blush: just get in the way!

However, I am a borderline plus size (14US) and have found that larger bags do look better on me -- maybe because they make me look smaller in comparison. It's probably a good thing, because like Prada Psycho, little bags are just not practical for me. About the smallest thing I can carry for everyday use is a Speedy 25.
