Has anyone changed their platinum/wht gold solitaire to a yellow gold with platinum/white gold head? If so, any regrets? Glad you did it?

My current soli is platinum and I’m debating changing it to yg with platinum head. Thoughts? Ideas? I know it’s a popular look right now but I’ve always worn gold jewelry and always mixed metals.

I haven’t done this, but I fully support the idea. I am on my fourth setting now for my ER diamond. I anticipate I will change it many more times in the future. I just keep the other settings so that I can go back to them down the road if I want to. One setting I did not like after a couple of years, so I just put another random stone in it and gave it to a relative.

I got engaged in December 1995 and this was this style back then (YG band, platinum head). Soon after, platinum became the rage (or white gold with a platinum head if all platinum was too pricey), so when DH upgraded my center stone in 2000, I moved to a platinum setting and got a matching band. DH upgraded my center stone again in 2015, but I kept my platinum setting and matching band. Fast forward to now and I’m kind of itching for a different setting since my center stone sits quite high and I would just like something different, although I’m not sure what. Not sure I’m ready for a YG band again, but I have been gravitating toward YG for other FJ pieces, so maybe?

One thing I learned when swapping out earring settings is that YG to WG or platinum may not make the wearer happy, as the stone may appear more yellow; apparently the YG setting helps to mask color. Maybe the reverse would enhance color? Just something to ponder/ask about/research as you consider options, as this was something that never would have crossed my mind until the jeweler mentioned it.

Thanks, @DME! Good point to consider. Are you saying yg may have your diamond appear tinted/warmer or wg?
You’re welcome! And to clarify, when I had diamond studs changed from YG to WG settings, I was warned the diamonds might appear more yellow because of the cooler undertone of WG; the YG helped to negate that. I didn’t notice a difference, but in looking at loose diamonds in various settings over the years, I can see how the color of the metal could impact, if you will, the color of the diamond. So it might be worth an ask if there is any impact to how the diamond will appear if you transition your band to YG. The platinum head might render any concerns moot, but since this was something I had never thought of before the jeweler mentioned it, wanted to share what I had learned. Let us know what you decide! Would love to see photos, if you’re comfortable (both before and after, if you make a switch)!

Excellent point, @DME and something I didn’t consider. I’m not color sensitive like many ppl are so I’m good going down in color for size, however, I wouldn’t want my stone to appear warmer with yg shank. Like you said, platinum head may negate that but still something to consider. Thx!

I went from PT to YG in a solitaire (not my engagement ring) and I was so happy with the result because the diamond was a lower color and just looked warmer in the YG.
