Hi ladies, i am suddenly rekindled in terms of my crush on the Chanel J12. I only ever had quartz watches, but i think a white scratch resistant watch will be a dream. However, i have not ventured into luxury watches as yet and was contemplating if i should be vetging rolex or cartier baignore instead for the price.

In terms of longevity of watch, is quartz or automatic from Chanel a better choice? I just dont feel like spending $10K on a quartz watch but automatic watches require servicing too right?

How much does servicing for auto watches j12 cost at Chanel?

Does price of J12 also increase every year? Wondering if i shld buy from store for new j12 movement or go preloved for the older movement

Any opinions will be much apprecIated!

I think that you should get the J12 over a Rolex (and definitely over a Cartier) because you should get something you love, rather than just what is more famous or what has better resale value. I know a lot about watches, but even then I continue to buy Dior watches even though they have poor resale value and aren't regarded highly in the horology world (Dior doesn't make its own watch movements) because I am a Dior Addict, and also love what they have done to their watches. At the prices I paid for my last one, an entry-level automatic Dior VIII, I could have gotten an entry-level Rolex, but the Dior won me over. Although I have seen it resell at super low prices, I still love it, and can't stop but stare at it for a while when I check the time when I wear it.

In short, I think you should love the watch that you buy. Otherwise, why even buy it? I also love the Chanel J12, and really wanted one for a while until Dior came out with the VIII which competed directly against it in black ceramic, and then white.

By the way, if you get the J12, get the automatic. I love being able to see through the back to see the movement. And yes, it may require a full servicing in 10 years for a price, but I think it is worth it because the new Chanel automatic movement looks very nice.

Personally, I won’t spend $$$ on a fashion watch and would probably just save my money for this Audemars Piguet watch I’ve had my eyes on for the longest time… but that’s the whole point: buy what your heart desires. If you want the Chanel J12 so much, you should get it.

Ooh, i shld check out this Dior watch which I do see it being mentioned as a competitor for Chanel j12!

YES! The new auto 12.1 movement got me.. as in i should get it from store than preloved, becos the thing about preloved watches would be the mechanism, if it was ever serviced, was it ever dropped b4.. i love the see through glass back in the new J12 but i am worried also about it cracking? I saw someone selling one that is scratched up at the back glass and i wonder how that cld happen! Given that it looks like new otherwise...

I was also eyeing the AP Royal Oak with diamonds but it is sooo way beyond my budget.. and i dont like that steel eventually gets scratched up.. the yumminess of high tech ceramic got me. Altho i saw some preloved white ceramic pieces showing some yellowing/stains..

The case-back is sapphire crystal. Not sure how someone got that scratched, as it is very scratch resistant (like the crystal at the front).

I would definitely get it at the store with the warranty. I got my Dior VIII fully serviced after 2 years just in time for the warranty to expire, only because I was able to get it from an authorized retailer with the warranty (it was Birks in Canada).

Oohh thanks much! I like that j12 comes with 5 yrs warranty , then again they also increased the price LOL.

Any idea the manufacturer of Dior's auto mechanism? Read that Chanel partnered up with Swatch previously but now with Tudor/rolex linked factory?

I love my J12s! I have an 41mm automatic white chronograph and an automatic 38mm chromatic with Diamond markers. Many J12s have been automatic all along: they just switched movements for the anniversary. I also have a Rolex Datejust 36mm (two tone/Roselor) and a number of Cartier watches, some automatic some quartz. I was going to get a Rolex Submariner or Sea Dweller but I always go back to the Chanel Chromatic. It is really a futuristic work of genius and sadly discontinued. It has a super low profile case for an automatic and is ultra lightweight because the chromatic material is blended with titanium. It is like having an almost scratchproof metal watch. I take both my Chanels on beach trips etc. that would potentially damage my watches, particularly two tones. And once a quartz watch has a battery change it is very tricky to ensure it is seaworthy. I vote for a J12 but do not be afraid to get an older one, also automatic. The ceramic is almost scratch proof but watch for wear around the metal bezel.
