I'm probably over thinking this, but this is the beauty of tpf in that it's easy to explain a "dilemma" without sounding absolutely crazy. In January, when I get my bonus, I'd like to splurge on some nice pieces of jewelry for myself. In the past, bonus time came around and I would buy a H Bag but I'm slowly migrating over to fine jewelry. I fell in love with the Chanel Camilia diamond pendant in the LARGE size which is roughly the same price as an Hermes Birkin. However, I'm starting to wonder if that's where I should spend my money. I went to a jeweler who showed me beautiful custom jewelry in a similar aesthetic (not a replica) at half the price. The piece I was looking at is also gorgeous and unique as the design is the jeweler's own and can be customized to my taste.

If I went the custom route, I could get a couple more items on my wish list, namely a VCA bracelet and Morelli earrings that I've been looking at. However, am I better off just going the Chanel route for future resale? I am not planning to sell any of my jewelry but will hand it to my daughter who may/may not want to sell it long after I'm gone. Thoughts? The other option is I can get the smaller Chanel pendant but I'm not quite sure what the size difference is as the boutique only had the large.

Pictures of the Chanel necklace and the necklace I'm contemplating (different color way) below.

Wish you took a picture with the first necklace. Even thought its beeeautiful, I like the second one. If you got the smaller Chanel necklace, then you can buy VCA and other things. We never know what one is going to love as a hand me down. You have to buy for your enjoyment now.

Thanks for the reply. I should have taken a picture of me wearing the first necklace. I wouldn't get it in red/white but either in all white or white with black trim. I tend to love pieces with more dimension which is why I'm drawn to both. I just don't know if buying chanel jewelry is "worth it" as they are mostly know for costume pieces so was thinking a custom made piece would be more "quality" than "brand" if that makes sense. Great advice to buy for my enjoyment - my daughter is going to do what she wants with everything I give her so may as well not think about it.

I also like the second one more especially because of the bigger stone

The second necklace is the chanel camellia necklace in a large. I believe the smaller version has a smaller stone.

In my experience I would not buy something I love less because price is cheaper (this assumes you can afford what you really want). If Chanel is what you really want, I don’t think you’ll be happy buying something else. Is Chanel jewelry overpriced? Sure it is. But if that’s what you really want and can afford it....will you be satisfied if you buy a custom? Will you still think about the Chanel? Good luck deciding.

I agree. I don't particularly like the Chanel ruby/diamond combo. I'd love to see it in the all diamond version. The custom one is very pretty! Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you for the response. You make a great point - if I have my heart set on something, something else may not satisfy. I've made the mistake of "settling" many, many times. In this instance, I'm actually annoyed that the item is Chanel as it marks up the price and what I really love is the design, which is why I considered a similar custom piece. However, the Chanel design is what originally drew me so I should just pay the premium. Even if I go custom and it's different, it's still not what I had my original eye on.

Thanks Skyqueen - the ruby one would have to be all white or even black/white as the ruby would not work at all for me. I'd need to see a CAD model to see if it would even look right without the contrast as it's hard to picture. She had another design which was more of a pinwheel but also had contrasting diamonds. Good news is that I have time to decide but you also make a great point as I'd need to actually see what the custom piece would look like in one color as it look drastically different.

Sounds like you’ve solved your dilemma. Hope you get what you want and enjoy.

I have the Chanel Camellia earrings and I absolutely love them. They look exactly like your pendant. Sometimes with “name brand” jewelry you end up paying more and getting less but in this case I think they are stunning and quite dazzling in person.

Amazing!! Thank you for posting and letting me know how much you adore the earrings. Even more of a case for me to go with what I love.

Get the Chanel. It’s beautiful.

Thank you - looks like that's where I'm headed :)
