Hi! A few years ago my husband bough me Chanel classic caviar black medium for 6800( total with tax taxes). I was disappointed as I though that nothing especially and I read that it easily can be scratched . And I returned it . But all these years it bothers me that I don’t have a Chanel purse yet. Now such purse cost $8800 plus tax . Usually I wear purses everwhere I go . Example my LV purse I wear in grocery stores and ect , the same with Valentino, Burberry . They hold quality very well , not much worn out . Now I about buying another designer purse , I think Gucci Mormont medium dirty rose ($2500) , Dior medium lady bag ($6100) , BUT I still think about CHANEL ( mini classic ? Chanel 19? Classic small ?). Is anybody have this dilemma ??? Is Chanel bag not about quality but presriqe???? By the way I noticed that premium designer go down on leather quality on bags and shoes. Are any thoughts and advise on my dilemma ? Thank you in advance .

It’s been years. You’re still thinking about the Chanel regardless. Honestly, I would just get the Chanel. I would not waste my time and/or money on any other purchases (i.e. Dior, Gucci) as you’ll still long for the Chanel. All bags can scratch, etc., so I always have felt this was a moot point anyway.

Perhaps second-hand buy with authentication to soften the blow of the price increase(s)?

+1. I am among the minority who doesnt care for caviar, and who has had good luck with lambskin.

However, an aged calf reissue might be more durable and is definitely cheaper if you do not carry much. Mine has gone through bad weather easily.

I was in the same boat. I had a chance to purchase the classic flap from Paris about 5 years ago but didn’t. I had been thinking about it ever since and just recently purchased a pre loved in medium caviar from 2011 and it is in perfect condition! So I wouldn’t say that they scratch easily or that the quality isn’t good. Any bag made from leather will scratch.

I was like you, very hesitant to spend the $$$ on Chanel. However, I knew I always wanted one. I decided to not buy any bag from another brand because I knew I’d always long for the Chanel. In terms of scratching/damage, I would agree with the above posts that any brand and any bag can be scratched. Unless you’re super rough on your bags and would prefer LV canvas? I love the look of Lambskin and know it’s not as carefree as caviar. Is the bag you want Lambskin and that’s the hesitance? Maybe you need an aged reissue or a caviar?

Anyway, once I decided to stop looking at other brands and keep my eyes on the prize I felt much better. I knew I would mentally come to terms with the purchase, especially when buying a Lady Dior, etc is still quite pricey. I knew what I wanted and wouldn’t settle for anything different! And that’s what I did. Purchased a small classic flap last week. No regrets!

Thank you for your input. I probably will focus only on Chanel and not other brand . What is leather of your bag ( lamb skin or caviar) And what price now on small classic ?

Where is place to buy Chanel second hand bag ? or is it better to buy in Europe ( I am going coming spring)?

My sister told me to keep my eye on the one i want no matter how expensive and never buy the cheaper ones or ill end up with lots of cheap ones and if I calculate how much is the total I spent on those, I couldve bought the bag that I wanted. Its true… I ended up with lots of bags before I got what I wanted…

Gucci and Dior can also be scratched.

Gucci marmont is made of lambskin? It's not more durable than Chanel lamb.
But with a fraction of the price, we might feel more comfortable seeing all scratches.

It's only worth it if it's valuable to you. To most of my friends, a $300 Coach bag is not worth it. So it really depends how much you value the bag. If the bag you're eyeing is $10,000 but you've been thinking about it for years and none of other bags could make you satisfy, then get it. It will be worth it since it's your dream bag! Just my 2 cents.
