I cannot decide between these two.

I already have a SL sunset bag (grained leather with silver hardware and leather strap from years ago) but I have lusted after the SL sunset bag with black hardware for a looooong time. I even bought one before the last price increase but returned because SL sent me a bag with scuffs. But SL might have a price increase in May.

I love both. Maybe the Celine a tiny bit more right now, but it changes depending on my mood.

The Celine is more expensive than the Saint Laurent. I'm also not a gold hardware girl, but the Celine Triomphe I love.

I have recently gone through something major that makes me feel like I deserve to treat myself.

Help?

I tend to favor adding variety to my collection and avoid repeating bags, so my pick would be the Celine Triomphe. However, I have a serious weakness for black on black bags. That so black SL Sunset is stunning! I can see why you're torn. Glad you made it to the other side and you definitely deserve to treat yourself. Keep us posted on what you decide.

Personally I'd go with the Celine, mainly because I too avoid repeating bags.

It's funny because I used to be a big YSL bag fan. There was a point when I owned 6 YSL bags, but I got tired of the logo. (It's still a beautiful classy logo, I think I just wanted something different.) And now I am down to 2 logo and 1 non-logo YSL bag.

I do really like black on black bags. One of the remaining YSL bags I have in my collection is a black on black bag and it's an easy go-to bag that subtly chic and I love it very much.

I actually already have a celine triomphe shoulder bag in the white canvas logo print and I love that bag too! But I do think the black and gold makes it less casual and more elegant. If I did not mind repeating bags, I would most likely buy the black and gold triomphe bag in shiny calfskin, that leather looks gorgeous!

Have you been able to try on either bag in-store? Sometimes that makes or breaks the decision!

My vote is for Sunset for several reasons:
1. You have wanted it for a very long time.
2. You know the bag style works for you.
3. While you already have this style, there are significant differences that make it NOT a duplicate, specifically the hardware color and the leather strap vs black metal strap. These imo, give the bags a different feel from each other.
4. You don't usually love gold hardware and the Celine has it front and center - literally. It's very prominent.
5. It's worth saying again: you have wanted this one for a long time. You now are ready to treat yourself so why not go for what you've been eyeing for so long?

If the above reasons aren't swaying you either way, then definitely go see both in person.

Would the gold hardware and shinier surface feel more dressy to you? If so, does that impact your decision when you think about what you would wear it with and where you would wear it?

Each bag has a very different feel to me. Which works best for how and where you want to wear it?

Do you feel like you would need different jewelry or other accessories to go with the gold? Or, conversely, do you see a gold "hole" in your wardrobe that the Celine would fill?

Best of luck either way! Happy choice and certainly no wrong answer here!

How is the Saint Laurent black hardware holding up for you? Any chipping? How long have you had it?

I have tried both bags, yes. And I love both.

I don't see a gold hole in my wardrobe, tbh. I also do not usually wear jewelry and on the rare times I do, it's white gold or silver. I don't think I have liked a gold hardware bag this much before the Triomphe too - maybe wait until Celine comes out with silver hardware Triomphe in the medium or teen size? I know they have one with the chain. But I can't decide if it looks better than the gold.

And you're right, I have wanted the Sunset for so long. I used to say if I ever win the lotto (not that I buy tickets but let's say I do), I know exactly what I will buy first - the Saint Laurent sunset black in black hardware. My concern is the chipping though - if the hardware chips, like how would I feel about it.

Celine is having a price increase soon apparently!

I have had it since February 2017 and it has held up beautifully.

There is some very slight chipping on the logo around the ends of the Y logo but nothing obvious.

It’s held up so well that I walked into a Moynat store in 2021 and they thought the bag was new!

My YSL SA said the chipping is something they can fix, for a fee of about $200 USD. I haven’t brought it in yet, I’ll wait till it gets a lot worse, though that may take a while haha.

That's awesome! What is the style/model of your bag?

Here you go!
And here’s a photo for reference on wear and tear, sorry I was thinking of the letter L but for some reason said Y, and 2 stud points on the top left of the Y and bottom S (I wore it out this morning, so it’s still out on the table lol)
I definitely did not pay $3K for that bag in 2017 lol. I think it was around $2200 including tax.

I love the envelope  And the chipping isn't so bad for a bag that's almost six years old! Do you use it a lot?

I wish I bought the black hardware sunset bag when I first saw it (it was love at first sight ) years ago!

Yes! Especially in the beginning when I didn’t have a lot of bags.
It’s actually kind of my errand bag now. Very low key and durable. My grab and go bag when I need to run out of the house.
The treated leather allows it to be relatively water resistant and I just wipe it down if it rains.
It’s also quite durable to light scratches. I’ve put it on the ground (aka concrete) and have definitely hit it on doors and door frames. (I am one who generally does not baby my bags and I can be a little rough with them :P )

It sounds like the YSL is best for you, but IMHO, the Celine is the clear winner. I don't like black-on-black and also don't like logos or matellase, so this is a very clear choice for me. I love some old Yves Saint Laurent styles, but the new logo + matellase formula really turns me off. I feel the same about recent Gucci styes. Logo + matellase = a clear no for me.
