I'm currently living in Tokyo, Japan, and everyone who comes to visit me says that Celine products are cheaper and of good quality here. However, I don't feel that the prices are that different. Could it be because the dollar exchange rate is favorable? What do you think? Has anyone bought Celine bags at a good price in Japan?

The quality should be the same. You can check the price their website by changing the location.

For example, looking at the "CLASSIQUE TRIOMPHE BAG IN shiny calfskin"

It is 4150 USD on the US website and 605,000 JPY on the Japan website.

605,000 JPY = 4015 USD.

In California we need to pay about 10% tax, so it would be $4565 for me to buy here.

When I go to Japan it is tax free so I get about 10% back, so it would be $3613 there.

If I could I would do all my shopping in Japan.

Wow!! Thank you for explaining in detail!! I wasn't sure that the prices on the official website include VAT. That definitely makes it much cheaper. However, since I live in Japan, I’m not sure if I can get a tax refund. I should try it when I leave the country later. The dollar is definitely strong, so there's a huge difference when we calculate the exchange rate in dollars. I receive my salary in JPY...sadly.......😭
I really appreciate you sharing your insights!

I don't think you can get VAT back if you have Japan passport, usually the stores take your passport and deduct the VAT from the total immediately before you pay. I read that they will start doing it at the airport in 2026 though, because too many people are abusing the system 😥

Oh, my passport is indeed a U.S. passport. I'm planning to stay here long-term for work. In fact, I just learned about the duty-free allowance a little while ago. Thank you for letting me know! :)
