Hi all,

I recently bought a Celine Sangle in natural calfskin (in the terracotta color). Two days ago I discovered a small oil stain on the top of the bag. I dabbed at it with a damp microfiber cloth, which has now left a small watermark in addition to the oil stain. I tried putting some cornstarch on it for 24 hours but that doesn’t really seem to have helped.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the stain? I read on the forum that you absolutely shouldn’t use baby wipes on natural calfskin. And I don’t want to put any water on it after what happened the last time. The bag is completely untreated.

I know stains will be absorbed into the patina of the leather as it ages, but this one really stands out against the beautiful color of the bag (it’s not showing up as distinctly in the pictures because my IPad keeps color correcting). The stain is right under the tab at the top of the bag.

I would appreciate any advice! Thank you.

Listen to me dear! As most of my bags are in Natural Calf, I know firsthand that this is relatively easy to solve! Oh how I wish I could do it for you as it is pretty fun!

Trust me on this - you're going to want to take a couple Q-tips. Wet them with warm water. Then you're going to want to scrub generously and with force over the stain. Make sure you get the area around the stain also. You're then going to need a blowdryer to dry the spot. I usually keep mine on medium heat. The water will evaporate quickly. Keep repeating this process until the oil stain becomes less visible!

Thanks you, Sophia! I’ll try that and report back tomorrow. Does the heat dry the bag out? And do you condition your natural leather? If so, what do you use?

Thanks so much! Fingers crossed that this works.

I tried it today, and it worked. You’re a genius, Sophia. The oil stain is completely gone. There’s a really faint water stain (really just a darkening of the leather in that area), but it looks much more like the natural grain of the bag. Thank you so much! Here’s what the bag looks like now. Thanks again. I wouldn’t have dared to put more water on the bag and turn a dryer on it if you hadn’t encouraged me to.

Anytime dear! I’m so happy you resolved this issue! It looks beautiful :)

this is very helpful Sophia! I saw a very beautiful natural calf classic box bag in store the other day. I was quite tempted. Do you know if natural calf is oil tanned or vegetable tanned?
