I am considering my first Chanel purchase soon for a classic flap. I’ve been reading a lot on these forums about different types of caviar leather. Does it differ for each bag or does it tend to go by season? If it’s by season, what is the current caviar leather like for this season? I know to check to make sure the flap lays well and is straight and to check stitching. Anything else I should know? I know my local boutique tends to get one of each bag in stock at a time so I won’t be able to compare two bags side by side.

Thanks in advance!!

I suggest that if this is your first Chanel and don't want to constantly worry - get caviar leather. My classic flap is caviar and i don't worry about ti nearly as much as my mini flap which is lambskin. I also believe that over many years, the caviar leather holds up better! But that's just my opinion :)

Thanks so much! To clarify, I am only considering caviar leather. That’s not even in question. What I meant was, I read the qualities of caviar leather varies each season. I was wondering if anyone here has experience to share about this season’s caviar.

You can read what I mean here

For Black Classics (REV) there can be variations, not necessarily by season, but because all skins are different. I tend to like not too matte with a little sheen, but not too shiny. You won't know until you see in person what you think of the particular piece being shown to you.

Seasonal Classics are a different thing. They are made in whatever finish Chanel is using for that season. However, I have noticed that the fabrication part of the style code has been the same over several seasons now. They tend to be softer, with some shine.

There are definitely variations season by season although I wouldn’t know if it varies bag by bag within the same season. I looked at a new medium CF in caviar late last year in person and didn’t love how dull/matte and flat the leather was. I ended up buying a pre loved CF afterwards after viewing it in person. The quilts were shinier and puffier. I compared this bag with my jumbo CF which is older and there were differences in the caviar too - the jumbo’s caviar was stiffer while the medium’s felt softer and more “pliable” if that makes sense. I would encourage you to go to a boutique and look at the bag in person, so you are comfortable with what you get. At the prices we are paying, you should be completely happy with your choice!

Caviar definitely varies and I’d just go see in person if you like it. If it’s pretty to you then buy it and promise yourself not to keep wondering how it compares with other classic flaps in caviar. You’ll go crazy.
I am going a little crazy about researching how different caviar can look like! As I am also about to buying my first classic flap  :panic:
