Hi lovelies,

I’ve thinking of getting the Cartier Trinity earrings (probably in the small size) as my everyday earring to wear 24/7.

However, as it’s not a huggie, I’m worried about getting poked by the stem backing while I sleep.

Does anybody have any suggestions for how to make it more comfortable to sleep with? I was thinking of keeping the backing at the end of the stem every time I go to bed - is that plausible?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

I’ve been investigating and experimenting with earrings worn 24/7 for years and have never found a feasible solution for traditional butterfly back earrings - the posts are just too long. I only wear sleeper hoops and flatback labrets.

I would worry not only about stress on the earring but also stress or pulling on your piercing. Occasionally I sleep with very light studs (bc one of my piercings always seems to close up a bit too much), but I don’t usually wear jewelry 23/7. Good luck though and pls update with any tips :)

Would not recommend sleeping with earrings on in the standard lobe piercing location.

Having done that for years with various studs and small hoops, I stretched out my lobe piercings. Sometimes they would bleed as well (I'm a side sleeper). Now I always take out my earrings before going to bed, even for a nap. On the daily, I actually don't wear earrings in my regular lobes anymore. I do this to help my piercing holes contract and shrink a little more in size. Not wearing earrings on a daily basis have helped shrink my stretched out piercings. So, now I just don't wearing piercings just as a preventative measure. I'll only wear earrings on the weekends or when going out to events, etc.

The cartier earrings are a larger size compared to your standard stud or huggie. Furthermore, the gold adds more weight. If you turn your head when you sleep, you will feel that pull.
Unless you can sleep still on your back and don't move in your sleep, I don't think they would be comfortable to sleep in.
(If you wonder how I did it for years, yes I felt it, it was uncomfortable, I just dealt with it because I didn't want to get out of bed.)

In addition, with gold, I have bent earring posts from sleeping with them on. That's also annoying to deal with.

Upper lobe piercings and cartilage piercings on the other hand, handle piercings better due to the thicker nature of the lobe as it goes up and of course, the sturdiness of the cartilage. However, I would only recommend flat back or ball back piercing for those.
I still sleep with my upper lobe piercings and cartilage piercings in and have not had any issues.

Please don’tvwear earrings 24/7, even if they feel comfortable. I wore diamond studs for years and eventually one of the piercing holes (the side I mostly slept on) enlarged to the extent that the earring backing could slip through. I had to go through the process of having the hole closed by a ENT doctor and then re-pierced. I learned the hard way — always take your earrings out at night.

Cartier can shorten the posts for you. A piercing brand (Maria Tash) measured my earlobes and recommended me 5 mm posts for lower piercings, which was very a useful information to me, as most earrings didn't sit right and now I know why (because the posts were too long). Ideally you need to try on various post lengths and figure out what's the right one for you. I've recently purchased Cartier small love hoops, which are also not huggies, and after wearing them for a few weeks, I sent them for posts shortening. Original posts were super long for me and uncomfortable to sleep in (9 mm). Although I never felt any pulling at night, having read the above, I think I'll refrain from sleeping with earrings in lobe piercings. I have two additional piercings on one of the ears and I never take those off, but those earrings are screw-ins and have a flat back (from Maria Tash), I don't feel them at all.

Why are you so adamant on wearing earrings 24/7? Like others have said, I wouldn't recommend sleeping in earrings—mainly because it's very uncomfortable, regardless of what type you wear. I don't want my holes to stretch out and I just find it easier to remove them altogether. The only jewelry I ever wore 24/7, were my Love bracelets.

With the flatbacks, do you move them to the last indent every time you sleep? So that the end of the post is flushed with the flat back?

I never knew your ear lobes and holes could stretch. I’ve never had an issue with it. I mainly sleep in my earrings because I’ve damaged earrings before from constantly opening and closing them, the hinges have stopped working or the snap in lock had loosened over time.

I disagree that sleeping with earrings is always uncomfortable. I have at least three pairs that I am able to sleep in without feeling a thing. Stretching out the earlobes is a concern for me, so I'm opting to remove the earrings on most of the nights. However, it can definitely be comfortable if you find the right pair.
