Cartier love necklace - chain lengthening & mini rant about Japan’s Narita boutique

Is Cartier being unreasonable or is this common practice when buying from Cartier?

  • Terminal 2 Cartier Boutique should give you the travel pouch & original box

  • It’s common that you only receive a travel pouch or original Cartier box, not both

Hi everyone! I have recently started to really get into buying jewelry and I “need” an every day necklace. I was eyeing VCA because I love the designs but the stones are delicate (guilloche and hammered gold are not an option). My thoughts are to get the Cartier baby love necklace either all gold or with diamonds - thoughts/opinions? The diamonds are really small and not that sparkly to my untrained eyes so I’m not sure whether the jump in price is justified..

Anyway does anyone know if Cartier will add a jump ring to the chain so that I can wear it at different lengths like they do at VCA?

I planned to get this necklace as a souvenir at the duty free airport in Japan but I was shocked when I emailed them and they said I don’t get a travel pouch with my purchase unless I forego the original Cartier box! Has anyone heard of this? I feel like that’s totally unfair. I purchased at the historic Rue de la Paix store in Paris and they gave me my original box AND a travel pouch AND a cleaning kit AND a stack of Cartier post cards AND gave me a private shopping experience in their VIP room even though I was not a VIP and I didn’t spend much (bought a plain love bracelet and hubby and I were dressed very casual and scrubby)! Needless to say I’m suddenly very put off from shopping at the terminal 2 Cartier boutique at Narita Airport after their email. Is this common? I’ve never shopped in Japan but I was under the impression that their customer service was unparalleled so I am shocked I have to choose between a box or a travel pouch. Am I being unreasonable because I received stellar (and potentially uncharacteristic) service at my first Cartier experience in Paris and now everything pales in comparison? I want to be fair so I need your thoughts on this please.

Sorry for the long post but interested in everyone’s thoughts, thank you!

I have the Love necklace in WG. I liked the chain much better than the one with diamonds. The lower price helped too! LOL. Cartier lengthened the chain for me but I didn’t ask about a jump chain.

good to know, thank you! How do you find the longer length after you lengthened it? Does it go with more of your outfits now?

Hi. Off the topic but what’s the price like in japan?
You can go to the Cartier japan website to check for your particular item :) the price includes 8% tax but if you’re a tourist it’ll be tax free if you shop with your passport so reduce the price by 8% you see on the japan website

I prefer no diamonds for every day. And weird rules doesn’t surprise me for Cartier, nor for a store in japan (where the retail experience seems really different) nor at a duty free store.

I imagine you are getting it altered when you get home so I would get the box and then, when you take it in to get it fixed tell they you would love a travel pouch and see if they will give it to you then.

I wouldn’t give up a box.

This is a really good idea, I never thought of that!! This helps solve our dilemma!

That is odd. When I buy Cartier (in the U.S.), I was always given a travel pouch, the Cartier box, and the cleaning kit.

That’s what I assumed too, that I could get everything and not have to choose between the original box or travel pouch. I’m going to keep asking. I just find it so odd that they’re asking me to choose between the two.

I like and needed the longer length. The SA and I tried a few different lengths in the boutique until I found one that worked for me. I have a few necklaces that I wear frequently so I had a pretty good idea how long I wanted the chain to be.
Take a look at the difference in chains at the boutique to see which one you like better.

This is such sage advice, thank you! I’ll also see if they’ll put in a jump ring because I might want to layer the necklace at it’s shorter length with something longer. Thank you again for the advice, I think I would also like the necklace longer too
