Okay, so I know this question has most likely been asked before but I couldn’t find a specific thread, so I’m asking for your opinions:

which is better - canvas or empreinte leather for wallets?

I’d like to buy my first LV wallet and leaning more towards leather (not epi), but also really love canvas.

Your input on the question would be most appreciated.

Empreinte might hold up a little better than canvas but also depends on the style of the wallet. I like Empreinte for folded wallet as the canvas will have cracking issue on the folds. Canvas is good with zipped around type of wallet and more light weight than leather. I find my Epi holds up the best. Like the 4 ring key pouch, is holding up very well even with scratches from the keys and with everyday use. If you google images of the wallets you can see how it is holding with usage.

Thank you! You’re right: it all depends on the style. Your tips have been helpful.

I have never owned a wallet in Empreinte, but I have two key pouches in this leather which I've owned for years and which have been used quite extensively, and both are holding up extremely well. I would personally stay away from Epi for a wallet, I haven't found that it holds up as well as Empreinte or Vernis, and certainly not as well as canvas.

For me, canvas is the best option for a wallet. It's extremely durable and lightweight. Particularly if you're going for a zip-around wallet, I would recommend canvas. I've owned my original style Zippy Compact Wallet in DE canvas since 2011, and it has held up so well. It's still in pristine condition inside and out. I know that there is some doubt about LV's quality in newer pieces, but I would really hope that if I buy another similar wallet I would have the same experience with it.

Good luck deciding!

I wasn’t sure about canvas, (not an LV buyer) but thought I’d give it a go for a change more than anything. My wallet is 4 years old, gets used daily and looks new still. I’ve been very pleased with it.

I have a Sarah wallet in monogram from 2008 that is in excellent condition. I did have it reglazed during lockdown, but I probably could've waited. The canvas looks beautiful and so does the inside. I should mention that I typically don't switch out my wallets. I move this wallet from bag to bag unless I'm using a small bag. So it's been used and used over the years!

I have several made of both, and like them for different things. I think it depends what style you’re looking for, and how you plan to use it. Are there certain ones you’re eyeing? A cardcase, small wallet, or full size wallet?

I really like the Emilie wallet, but I also like the Clemence. Decisions, decisions!

I have the Emilie wallet in empriente (noir). If this is the one you choose, I would do empriente, because the button is gold-tone hardware. The canvas version has a leather button and the leather gets rubbed off easily. Also, over time the canvas versions start to curl at the flap, and they get more stretched-out looking. One plus is a phone can fit in the Emilie wallet. I have an iPhone 11 Pro, and it fits in mine nicely with a case. Since I have the noir empriente I actually use it as a clutch for dressier events as well.
It’s very versatile.
If you go for the clemence wallet, the canvas version would work just as well as the empriente since it zips. I don’t have the clemence, but do have the canvas zippy wallet, and it has worn very well. It keeps its shape and looks really nice still.

I've heard that about the canvas versions of the flap wallets (like Emilie and Sarah), so I've decided to steer away from those. My first choice would be the Emilie in empreinte, but I don't like the interior colour of the noir version (is that weird)?

Glad to hear about the zip around versions - Clemence and the Zippy. I think I'm leaning more towards that as I do think I want a canvas one but really not sure!

Mon portefeuille sarah en cuir empreinte que j'utilise depuis 5 ans est pratiquement à l'état neuf. Il est plus discret, mais plus élégant selon moi.View attachment 5131902
For those who can’t read french, poster noted that her sarah wallet empreinte has been used for 5 years and is like new. It is discrete but more elegant in her opinion. Très belle couleur!
