I have a wallet that I got heatstamped when I bought it but have not really used it much. I'd like to give it to my mom because it is more her style. We share only one initial so that is a little problem - I don't want her to feel she is using my wallet.

Is there a way to scrub the initials off somehow? Will it damage the surface much?

TIA!

Im pretty sure its permanent! My understanding (correct me if Im wrong) is that heat stamping is applying a hot letter stamp to the leather piece with ink involved. Thus the ink is bound to the leather through a process of heat and an indentation is created in the leather that mimics the stamp used. SO basically its stamped with ink, heat and pressure. You end up with an indent in the leather in the shape of your chosen letters and ink that is fused to the leather itself. So even if you tried to scratch it off, (if you even can get the ink off) you would still be left with an indentation of the letters.

Now painting is where they apply paint to the leather/canvas (ex. groom collection) and that is applied on top of the material. Many people have reported wear and that the painting peels off/rubs off with use. If you have initials in the paint you could probably scratch it off (but I wouldnt suggest this, because it would scratch your bag!).

I doubt you have painting, as most wallets would be heat stamped. So basically in my opinion, you cant remove it and if you tried it would ruin the wallet. I suggest your mom either live with it, or try and sell it, or even ask LV store if they can re hot stamp overtop of it somehow to change the initials. Maybe they can put like a big round dot over the letters you dont like hahah or something. If its a P and need to be a B maybe they can fix that ?!?!? Im not sure. But to answer you, I highly doubt you can scratch it off and if you did it would still leave the indent and also you would ruin your wallet.

My friend just bought a keepall that she had heatstamped. She had to sign a waiver knowing she can't return it because it is permanent. So I would think it can't be removed.

Thank you for the info.

Oh well, I'll ask her if she will mind using the wallet with my initials. I'm an N and she is M. Close enough, right? ;-)

I don't think I will get my other items heatstamped. I like to sell things when I get bored of them so this is a problem. Live and learn.

Thanks again!

Ya i wasnt sure if it was ink or not...but its some sort of colouring application that I doubt is removable.

Yes dont heat stamp if u want to resell with ease. I would say heat stamp things like luggage tags bc then u can always sell the bag and keep the tag.

Sorry I hope my explanation didnt seem rude...I was trying to just explain everything from what I understand! My apologies if it seemed rude at all!

I have heat stamped a luggage tag and want to heat stamp a bag on the tabs that attach the handles....but im afraid :S might just use a luggage tag on it instead!

Unfortunately, I have the same problem. Mine was just stupidity. I heat-stamped my luggage tag and then decided that I thought the engraving would look better on the opposite side. Well, I called LV and they said 'no.' So, I called a local leather business and they said 'no' as well. Oh well, like you said, "You live and learn!" :shucks:

You can remove the foil portion of the heat-stamping (don't remember how though), but the underlying impression in the leather will always remain. It can "fade" with wear and time, but it's pretty much there for good.

I bought a Louis Vuitton bag on Fashionphile and idiot me didn’t realize it was hot stamped lol I knew it was too good to be true. I actually was able to remove it from the leather by using masking tape and going over it repeatedly with either a butter knife or toothpick it takes a lot of tries but you can get it off. Hope this helps for your wallet!
