Hi everyone, i just got my first florentine bag and it’s mostly all pebbled in the medium toggle chestnut. My mom bought the same bag and hers it totally smooth. What causes the variation? And which one ages better? And which do you all like better? Idk if to return it and ordered again since the last one i ordered was half smooth and half pebbles, at least this one is mostly pebbled

Over the years there has been a lot of discussion about whether a pebbled or smooth
Florentine handbag is 'better'. Bottom line, it's a matter of preference. The pebbling or smoothness is a natural characteristic of the Florentine leather..... this type of leather is
not embossed, buffed, treated or coated.

Pebbled Florentine leather will wear better,
in my experience. It will show fewer scratches and withstand wear better. On occasion,
when I have had a choice, in a store, I've picked the pebbled bag over the smooth one.
That said, most people prefer the smooth leather because they prefer the smooth look.

It's really up to you. If you don't mind the pebbling then enjoy the bag.
If the pebbling bothers you, then return the bag. There is no guarantee the
next bag will look any better or that the texture will be even. Some pieces
of leather are pebbled in some areas and smooth in other areas. If the texture
is random, then I don't like the look. If the texture is even or confined to specific
sides of the bag, then I might keep the pebbled bag.

Thank you for this answer. I was hoping you’d answer since I see you seem experienced in dooney bags based on reading through the forums here. My mom got the same bag this month and it’s buttery smooth and mine is pebbled, i like both and thought the same thing if i return it the next one might be uneven or something. I got the toggle in ecru and had to return because half was pebbled and half smooth and the toggle loop was defective and oddly huge lol i really loved the florentine ecru color.. worried about trying again and the same thing happening

Your bag looks good to me. Yes, there is some pebbling, but overall the bag looks very nice.
It's really hard when we can't see the handbags in person and have to order remotely.
I'm in the situation now.

I'll share how I decide whether to keep or return a handbag....
I consider the price and discount and the condition. If I were standing
in the store, would I buy the bag for that price with what ever 'flaws' or
imperfections I see? If I am paying full price, I am very, very, very picky.
But if I am getting a good sale, then I determine if the flaws are functional
(like a broken zipper) or a major issue (like broken stitching or major scratches)
or if the flaws are really cosmetic preference item..... pebbling vs smooth,
a little color variation on the back or sides of the bag, etc. I'll admit,
a great sale price balances out some relatively minor cosmetic issues, usually.
However, if every time I glace at the bag I'm going to be annoyed and my eyes
will always go right to the flaw.... then I know not to keep the bag.

I will often pack up a bag for return and then give myself a few days to decide.
If I have second thoughts, I'll keep the bag. If I'm happy to start the return
process, then I know I've made the right decision (for me).

And just a word of caution.... no matter where I bought a handbag, i never wait
to return until the end of the return window. I find things o smoother and I have
much less stress if I make a decision within a week of getting a bag and then
starting the return process quickly. I return very few handbags, and maybe I
should return more. On the other hand, I returned a bag recently that was
perfect....except I knew if would be too small for me to use. I accepted that I would
have to pay the return fee ($10), and even tho the bag was a fabulous bag at a
really incredible price, I let common sense rule my desire to own that little
treasure. 🙄

Same here, i try to determine as quickly as possible if I will return it, preferably the same day I receive it, i don’t want to have boxes and clutter around so I returned everything quick! But the last returns have been mostly due to pretty bad quality and not cause i didn’t like the bag (except a nylon bag that was wayyy too small). But i kept this toggle bag to “think” about it but I will be keeping it. And i also kept the new style “pebble grain crossbody hobo” from the ild website in clementine, the size is so perfect and the quality is like perfect and since it’s an off season color i got it for $105, now i want the other colors and they are $189 so I won’t be getting them for now. I got a black florentine baguette that was under $100 from ild and it was also damaged and an ecru Allison that had chipping white paint on the strap and glazing that had smudged in different areas around the bag and messy overalls glazing. I also got an Allison chestnut with a jammed zipper and uneven texture all over the bag. I was really starting to get upset with my luck on the quality of the bags. But since the clementine hobo crossbody was perfect and the toggle is pretty good too (except for some popped stitches on the back zipper pull) I’m still waiting on couple other bags to arrive, and hoping they are good. I’ve had to return like 8 defective bags and not once got charged the $10 because they knew it was unacceptable quality. I have a store 4 hours away but feel silly driving there and back just for a few bags lol will be in the area around thanksgiving and planning on passing by and getting some Christmas presents for myself! Where’s your nearest store?

There used to be a Dooney boutique very close to my home. It was a great place to shop,
and yearly half off sales were etched into my calendar. But they closed the store several years ago. Now there are only the outlets.... one about 60 miles away and one about
100 miles away. Hard to predict travel time due to traffic. But my issue isn't the
distance/time, rather my arthritis. The logistics in these large outlet malls isn't
friendly to me.... large, crowded parking lots and then very long walks to the actual store.
Shopping is no longer a favored hobby for me. And since I don't need another handbag...
now or ever, the hassle factor outweighs the pleasure. Fortunately 😁 I can buy lots
or handbags online. My wallet isn't happy about that. But I can satisfy my collectors
cravings with the click of a few keys.

Hi can anyone identify this bag scored at tj maxx. Looks like saffiano leather

View attachment 6087193
It looks like the 'Satchel' style that Dooney has done in several different leathers.
The leather is NOT Florentne or Pebble. It looks like Saffiano, but I wasn't aware that
Dooney had done this style in Saffiano. It's not on the Dooney or ILD site, nor is it on
QVC or Dillard/s, places where Dooney often does customized offerings or introduces classic styles in new leathers.

It's possible that it was another leather. Over the years Dooney has released this satchel design in quite a number of other leather...Samba
(a very soft slightly pebbled leather), and Ostrich embossed, and Croco embossed, just
to name a few. And then there are the 'smooth leathers' like Wexford and Penrose.
The embossed grain in your picture looks like Saffiano, but maybe there was some other
similarly embossed leather that Dooney did in the past or is planning to release in the
near future.

Do you have the product code? Sometimes we can figure out the collection from that info.
And do you know the size of the bag (was the base 12 or 13" long, the standard, formerly
small size for this satchel design) or was it much smaller or larger?

Hi! Thank you so much for the reply! It looks like Saffiano to me as well. I was so struck by the color I bought it then couldn’t find anything online.

Here’s the tag

The base measures almost 12.5”.

The tag says it's an exclusive. That sometimes means it was a sample bag that
wasn't put into production. Or it may have been a limited release for a particular
large 'client' (like Dillard's, for example). Often bags with this designation are
one of a kind or very limited quantity. In years past, I have bought bags
with similar tags during special sales at the Dooney boutique (when there was one
in my area). These days those bags sometimes show up at the outlets or online
on I Love Dooney, where the quantity designation tag will say 1 of 1.
Enjoy your new handbag. It may or may not be Saffiano or it may be another texture
they were developing.

Such great information ! Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. I know I won’t see myself coming and going with this bag
