Greetings D&Bers. I'm new to this brand and do not know D&B at all.
I ran into 2 bags at a garage sale yesterday and bought them both (each for $15). Can you help me identify them?
I'll start with the first. It's obviously an AWL bucket bag, but when looking online, I've seen 2.0 and 3.0, and I have no idea what that is in reference to. Also, there seem to be different versions of bucket bags, so I'm wondering this gal's name.
It appears that there was a tag inside, maybe, that has been removed. There is no other sewn in tag.
Welcome to the Dooney forum. I hope you enjoy your new (to your) Dooney handbags. In general, Dooney is a high quality brand with good materials and good construction.
Like all brands, they have multiple line/collections which cater to different styles and
price points. The AWL, Florentine, and Alto collections are the top at Dooney and all are excellent in terms of material, constructions, and design.
Dooney AWL (All Weather Leather) collection was one of their first. The original AWL was
very thick and the pebbling resulted from the manufacturing process that shrunk the
leather making it very dense and durable. The bags were unlined and the style often
equestrian reflecting the heritage of the brand. The bags were made in Norwalk CT
at the Dooney location. It was a very high quality collection and known for the fact
that the leather would repel water (like water on a duck's back). Many of the older
bags are still available on the resale market.
Over the years Dooney has released the AWL 2 and AWL 3 collections.
Successive collections changed the styles, added lining to the bags and also
changed the leather. Customers wanted lighter weight handbags and Dooney
found other ways of processing the leather. I'm not familiar with the AWL 2
and AWL 3 collections. I don't know if they have the same water resistance
characteristics as the original AWL.
I also add that Dooney does an excellent nylon collection.
I prefer leather handbags, OK, I'm a leather snob. But over the
years I've added quite a few Dooney nylon handbags to my collection
because they are lighter weight. I've found the construction to be excellent,
the nylon to be strong and durable, and the leather trim to be on par with
leather handbags. And in the darker or neutral colors, I think the Dooney
nylon handbags look quite nice. (Told you I'm a leather snob).
