I recently came across a pony hair wallet and was debating whether it was worth purchasing. It was really cute and felt nice to the touch, but I'm concerned about it being dinged around my purse and the hair falling off. I have a pair of calf hair pumps that so far doesn't show any signs of wear and I've worn it about a dozen times, but for a wallet I'm concerned that it would be harder to keep it in check.

Anyone have experience with pony hair purses or wallets for daily use?

I have had them in the past, own one I love and coincidently just bought another with pony hair accents today!

Pony hair is not delicate per se but it isn't sturdy and relatively carefree like coated canvas or even leather. You buy it knowing that it usually isn't a forever item. Some pony hair items shed. Also, wherever it's handled repeatedly - like where your hand will grip the wallet is more likely to go bald.

The pony hair bucket bag I own hasn't shown any wear despite me using it for 2 years. But I try to be careful with it - even keeping it from rubbing against my body more than necessary.

Bottom line for me, I LOVE the look it can give some items so I will buy it - but only for my less expensive items. That way I don't worry if it needs to be chucked or replaced after a few years. No way I'd spend 4 figures on anything pony hair.

Good luck and let us know what you decide! Share pictures!

I have calf-hair wallet and I also have some costly 'pony' jackets and bags and boots. As you can guess the main problem is rubbing. The jackets and bags have lasted better (the bags are hand-held) but as expected the boots are showing a few bald pots where rubbed BUT I've had them years so actually much hardier than rumour has it.

Thanks Sparkletastic and Papertiger! I finally decided to not get the wallet. Although I enjoy the furry aspect, I think in the long run I would be sad if it started to lose its hair after repeated use, especially if it's being handled around in a larger purse and thrown in there with everything else. :( It's also a few hundred dollars so it's not chump change for me! :p
