Hi:

I planned on purchasing a Cartier watch- either a Tank Solo or a Panthere, after saving up for about a year. The purchase was supposed to be a reward after working my butt off last summer on wildland fire deployment (I work for a fire district). It's something I've been considering for probably three years or more. Now, I am hesitating. Part of it is spending $3,000 to $4,600 on a watch, but I am also concerned about wearing it at work, as in, whether I would need to be extra careful with it.

I am not hard on my watches or jewelry, but, considering what I do, I am looking for some input. I'm not a firefighter, but a public information officer. That being said- I am still out with crews when they respond to fires, etc. I used to be in the corporate world, and, for a while at my current job, I put away most of my Lagos, Yurman, John Hardy, etc. I am now making a point to wear what I own.

My current watches- several Micheles, a Mauboussin and a few others. I rotate them and change up the bands. I purchased many of them on eBay, so if something happens to one or more of them, I'd not be very upset.

So- my questions for you all: how well would a Cartier stand up to any wear and tear? If you were in my position, would you purchase one?

TIA for any comments, suggestions.

For wear and tear, nothing beats a sports watch such as a Rolex or Omega. Cartier naturally has been known as dress watches. For daily wear, wear and tear is really hit or miss depending on the wearer and how careful or careless they are.

If you have a desk job, the watch should be fine, if it requires more activity, something more durable might be better.

Instead of a Tank Solo or Panthere, have you considered the Pasha? It's Cartier's original sports watch...

Thank you- I will take a look at the Pasha.

I love my Tank, but to be honest do not wear it often only when on vacation. My job requires me to be on the computer and I am afraid that my watch will acquire too many scratches. Many times I have banged around my everyday watch and am thankful that I wasn't wearing one of my "nicer" watches. Maybe you can wear it when you are not going on site and wear one of your other watches then? It's always nice to have one nice watch in your collection.

Thanks for the insight. I hate to buy it and be afraid to wear it. With COVID, we're not going out, so, I don't have the opportunity to wear it when I'm not at work.

I was actually thinking about getting the Panthere in SS as an everyday watch too. So I’m also interested to hear about wear from those who have it.

I don’t think I’ll mind seeing wear on the bracelet (like someone else has mentioned, probably will come from hitting and friction from laptop) but I would be upset to see scratches in the face of the watch.

I have the Pasha in SS so same materials.

I can say as a person who tries to take really good care of things and had only worn the watch for less than 5 times in total from the time I sent my watch in to get the complimentary service at the 2 year mark, it was sent back to me with notes of wear and tear more than what I would expect on a relatively new watch.

Grant it, I did have a few scratches that even I can see on a few links, but what Cartier stated for wear and tear seemed so much more.

My point is: expect wear and tear on the watch, but enjoy it if you plan to purchase one!

If you are a person that absolutely has to wear a watch because you are so used to it and would like a nice watch, sure go for it but expect wear and tear (or use a wristband more often for heavy duty work).

If you aren’t a person that absolutely has to have a watch everyday, then don’t do it.

I’ve had my Pasha since 2014 and have only worn it a total of less than 5 times. I use my phone for a watch, but I don’t regret purchasing it because my size is now discontinued, and it’s a great casual watch for me when I want to use it!
