I live in NJ and I have a $1000 gift card to Bergdorfs. If I buy a Cartier tank solo from BG (actually, do they even sell Cartier? It's been years since I've been inside the actual store), will I avoid tax since there is no BG in NJ?

Yes, but you would probably have to ship it as a "gift" to a different NJ address (for some reason, they won't let you send it to your own house). I live in NJ and I do it all the time, especially at Saks. I purchase at the store and send it to my friend's NJ address :)
