Hi ladies! I need help on this. My mother, who's in her mid-fifties and a physician, spent my entire childhood being aggressively cheap about fashion - I remember lots of Macy's sales - while totally spendthrift about other things, like a Steinway grand piano and gourmet food. Different priorities. :smile1:

So she's always been a ONE bag at a time woman and that one handbag was always some kind of cheap unbranded affair until they wore out (like threads hanging out and leather split) and she got another. A while back, I took her purse shopping and gently pushed her into Michael Kors. She has a black Jet Set tote now and loves it! "It has room for everything" is how she explains it -- practical to the last.

I think she could benefit from adding a smaller bag - a satchel or maybe a crossbody - for evenings and weekends, maybe in a brighter color. Where would you I start suggest looking? (She's 5"3 with a size 6 frame, for reference - and my budget is up to $600, but Mom would probably prefer I find something cheaper.)

Mulberry do lovely satchels, and some of the colours are TDF!
I am not sure what they retail for in the States, however here in the UK the 'Medium Lily" (shoulder bag) is £895, 'Tessie Satchel' is £595 and 'Effie Satchel' is £650, to name a few.. But there are lots of other lovely styles too :D

You may want to venture into a new brand - Massaccesi. Handcrafted in Italy. I think the Zhoe will be right for your mom. It's in the $300+ range. It was the first that came to mind as I was reading your post.

Thank you! I've actually been stalking the Zhoe since hearing about it from your Massaccesi thread. I'm impressed. Unlike some others, this is a new bag whose quality I can see. And the styles are classic enough and not at all "blingy." It's on the short list!

@Lee Sadly, Mulberry is definitely out of my price range, haha. That's, like, significantly more than my rent. :) But they are certainly handsome bags.

If possible, take her shopping with you, without divulging that you're actually looking for a bag for her. that way you'll get a real feel for the size and color of a bag for her. But be forewarned, you might very well have to end up getting her another MK Jet Set. Have fun shopping!

Michael Kors has such a variety of bags in a range of colors. You could always select another one for the current profile you're wanting.

IMHO, the ultimate 50 something small bag is the Ferragamo Abby. It's a stretch in your budget but…wow... it is an understated bag of the very quality, and really timeless. Can be a shoulder bag or cross body, and it has that lovely closure that Ferragamo uses. It doesn't come in a huge range of colors but you can get a brighter one if you shop the range of online stores that carry it. Ferragamo is a classic choice for a professional woman and the Abby is the most affordable of their bags.

I recommend taking a look at DKNY. Their style is very classic and the quality is very good - the prices are really reasonable when looking at the designs and quality!

Ah thank you for all the amazing suggestions, guys!

I'm trying to go halfway between "fun" and "classic." My mom's dress style is pretty conservative but she already has a great black purse (that I bought her) so I'm aiming for fun here.

Or should I break out of bags completely and buy a Hermes scarf? It is tempting to entertain that possibility. I don't think Mom has even heard of Hermes. :lawl:

A Hermès scarf would be a wonderful gift as well!

Scarf!!! If she's not fussed with bags she'll not be thrilled for another one, and these are little pieces of art.

Here, lemme help:

LOL you're such an enabler. I'm afraid of scarf-shopping because I'll just want them all for myself. I'm obsessed with scarves. I might have fifty or more at this point... the only reason I'm not broke is that most of them were purchased inexpensively for their colors/woven patterns and were, like, <$10.

But then I looked at the Hermes website... and now I want to go back to finance, so I can afford to buy ALL OF THE SCARVES. :p
