Hi everyone,
I hope someone can help me...I purchased the Burberry Sandringham trench coat in a size 4 (my usual coat size) and it was about 2” too small in the bust. I realize now I should have sized up and am exchanging tomorrow at Bloomingdales, my place of purchase. Unfortunately, none of the department stores or Burberry stores near me have any of the trenches in stock in the stores. I really liked the slim silhouette of the Sandringham but it was much too tight overall. I’m thinking of exchanging for the Kensington in a size 6 for a more timeless, forgiving fit where I can layer. Here are some of my measurements. I really hope someone can give me some direction!

Height: 5ft 3in
Weight: 125lbs
Bra size: 32DD (I couldn’t button up the Sandringham to my bust)

I also have slim shoulders and arms, which is why I originally went with the Sandringham.

Will the Kensington size 6 be my best bet? Thank you all so much!

Best,
Dana

Hi! I had the same problem as you.

The Sandringham is cut way too slim. I am a size 4 and I could not get into the Sandringham. The arms and upper part were way too tight. Not to mention, even if sized up, it’s hard to layer with even a sweater due to the cut. I was at a Burberry boutique and the SA was great and I tried on all sizes and styles.

I ended up with the Kensington, size 6. I tried on a size 4, and it did fit me but it felt a bit tight around the sleeves and shoulders for layering. I have square shoulders. The SA told me size 4 is my size, but I told her I wanted to go up one size for when I wear sweaters and even a jacket. The size 6 was a bit looser around the waist but it was perfect for what I wanted. The SA also said she liked it better when she saw it on me. She agreed a tight fit is not always a good thing. And these trenchcoats do not stretch.

Also, I want to let you know I purchased the short length. I am 5’ 2” and I plan to wear my trench in the spring and fall/early winter. Anything less than say 40 degrees, I’m whipping out my long camel coat. Because of that, I went with the short and love it. I usually wear skinny jeans and the short version tied up with skinny jeans is such a chic look. At first when I told the SA I wanted the short, she wrinkled her nose and said it will be too short and not good for warmth. Then I told her the look I wanted (to go with casual skinny jeans) and when she saw it on my, she said it was perfect. I do not plan to wear my trench with dresses or suits. That’s something you may want to think about. The reason why I say that is I’ve seen some shorter ladies wear mid-length trenches and it’s not quite a great look, at least not to me. Then... I saw a lady wear skinny jeans, the short trench, tied up, and she looked fabulous which is where I got the idea to get the short length given I am only 5’ 2”.

Last thought... I am petite... 108lbs. And for a fitted “Sandringham” look, the SA told me this trick to get a fitted look which I love... she said when you wear your trench, don’t button it. Rather pull it across tight as the edge will almost align with the buttons on the opposite side. Then tie it, but make your tie off-centered matching the edge of your coat, don’t tie it in the center. By wrapping more, it hugs your body and hips more. I do that all the time now and I love the look! It’s a very fitted “I’m a lady spy” look if that makes sense.

Hope this was helpful. Good luck!

Wow! Thank you so much for your thorough reply! That was so incredibly helpful to read. Your advice is certainly appreciated. I’m looking to wear this coat to ether dress up or down, but I want a more classic and timeless piece in my collection. I definitely think the Kensington is the way to go. Although I loved the fitted look of the Sandringham, it’s just way too slim to be comfortable given the high price point. That makes me wonder how super slim the Chelsea model is!

That being said, I’m definitely going with the Kensington size 6. Thank you SO much for your detailed reply. I still think I’m going to do an even exchange for the mid length just because I have a lot of short length pea coats already and I don’t own a longer coat.

I’m so glad you had such a helpful SA!

Glad it helped and if you will wear it dress up and down, then yes, I think the mid length is best.

Do try the wrap trick the SA told me and see if you like it.

I think you will love your trench. I love mine more than I thought I would, for sure.

Congrats!

I will definitely try the wrap trick! It sounds very classic and stylish (as well as lady spy-like)!

I’m SO hoping the size 6 will fit. I don’t want to go through the exchange process again, but now I can look forward to receiving another package in the mail. [emoji4]

Hi! Sorry to keep bothering you, but I have one more thought I want to share. The Heritage trenches offer an optional warmer. It’s like a detachable vest to keep you warm if this is also going to be your winter coat.

I have another Burberry with a detachable warmer and I use it a lot. I purchased (had to order) the warmer for my short Kensington but sadly, the SA called me back and said the warmer is only offered for the mid-length and long trenches.

Just FYI in case you might be interested. Go to the Burberry website and search on warmer. You will see the choices.

If I ever get a mid-length, I will for sure get the warmer. Burberry will sew the buttons on your trench to match the warmer so you can button it on, and they will do this for free.

You can tell I really love this trench! I hope you will too!

Sorry for all these posts. [emoji51]

She came in today and fits beautifully! A bit spacious in the arms but a very comfortable and flattering fit. I’m so happy! Also, isn’t this the older logo! I wonder how I ended up with that! The Sandringham I tried had the new logo.

Oh... I’m so glad it fits and you like it! The arms will feel perfect when you wear that thick sweater. [emoji1]

On the logo, my logo is the same as yours. I bought mine in March/April this year and back then, mine was the “new” logo. I think the logo changes enough that it doesn’t matter, at least not to me.

A couple other things...
I see you got the dark buttons like mine (same logo, same buttons so that makes sense). I like the dark buttons ten times more than the new Heritage trenches with the light buttons (see Burberry website).

Also... I noticed Sandringham is no longer listed as a Heritage trench so I wonder if that is why the Sandringham you got had a different logo.

Just some thoughts which are trivial but I wanted to share.

Congrats on your new trench!

By the way, if your Sandringham had this logo, it was for sure the logo before the logo on my trench so it’s the “old” (2017?) logo. I know this as I wanted to be sure my trench had the “new” (2018?) logo and not the “old” one below. I have not yet seen the “new new” logo (is there is a new one) of the trenches yet with the blond buttons but I’ll be sure to take a peek next time I go to the Burberry boutique. I expect with the new buttons there may be a new logo too.

So many logos! Maybe an expert can chime in.

The Sandringham you pictured is the same logo mine had (before I exchanged it). I thought that was the new logo...who knows! I wonder why the logo changes so often. Does it have something to do with the place of manufacturing? Maybe different factories have different logos (or different production seasons). I definitely like the dark buttons to contrast the honey color. I looked at the Burberry site and saw the new tan buttons and am not a fan. Also, the price increased by $200. Yikes!

The sleeves of my Kensington are a bit too long, but are perfect when I stretch out my arms. I’m not sure if I want to risk a shoddy tailoring job or just cope with longer sleeves. The length of the coat is also perfect. It comes up about 3” above my knees. I was worried it would be a bit too long but I’m very happy with it!

I saw the latest trenches at the boutique this past weekend. The logo is still the same as the logo we have. The buttons are now blond though. Funny... a lady was trying on a trench which I heard the SA say it was a Kensington and lady said “oh, this is much better than the tight one”. She was also getting the liner.

Happy New Year!
