Bring It! Dance show from Lifetime

I'm going to watch tonight's episode, even though I've only seen the first one. I'll catch up on the others this weekend.

I meant to tell you hello and ask you how your Phantom was doing, lol! I've been try to put mine away to give it a rest for the summer, but either I'm lazy or really love it!

Oh hey girl, good to know you have been enjoying your Phantom. Mine is sitting pretty with her sisters and brothers right now. :P Might pull her out in a week or 2.

I'll catch the next episode of Bring It! tomorrow when the day has calmed down. I hope it'll be good.

The raciest aspects of their dance, in my opinion, is tied to hip hop/modern dance styles, more so than African dance (if I may make that distinction). Traditional African dance (across the continent as far as I have observed and participated in) does not require women to spread their legs wide open and thrust forward with the pelvis. At least not while keeping ones legs wide open. It would be deemed too provocative even in this day and age. Now, if we are at the club with dim lights....well, we all know how that can go down.

Now the moves the Divas of Olive Branch were doing in the last episode? Good Lord! I thought I was watching a hip hop video from that era when the objectification of women was at a peak. (Don't know what happens now). Well, I think that their coach has done them a great disservice.

In a weird way, though, I'd rather them (and by them I mean the Dolls) do those moves in a choreographed routine, instead of at a club, or a party, or something.

And the fact that they're spending so much time dancing means they have less time to possibly get into trouble.

Personally, if I had a daughter, I'd rather she not do dance moves like that at all. If she did, I'd rather she dance like the Dolls, and not the Divas.

Out of the two groups, they're the lesser of two evils here.

I agree!

Okay, I've never watched any dance-related reality tv shows but somehow ended up watching Bring It! Is anyone else watching this?

It features a dance squad in Jackson, MS and they compete in majorette competitions. I don't know much about that dance culture, but I do know one of my homegirls was on a dance squad in high school and she came from Jackson...

Anyway, the show was interesting. I, oddly enough, liked the coach, Ms. Diana. She admitted to making some mistakes in her past and sees herself as a role model to help her girls learn how to get through life. I liked her tough love approach, even though it didn't always sit well with the moms.

Well, anyone watching?

Anyone familiar with that culture?

What do you think?

I grew up in Miss and her style of dance is typical with majorette/dance lines at historically black colleges and universities. Here are a few examples:

Jackson State Univ

These ladies add to the extravagance of the half-time show that occurs during football games. In fact, it is not uncommon for people to attend JUST for the halftime show and then leave. lol :P

On another note, I'm not a regular watcher of the show because I too think this style of dance is "too grown" for the younger girls (even though I'm sure they have probably seen that and much more on daytime tv, but still).

I watch the show and I line Diana. Those children have a lot respect for her. I wish she would use some of her tough love and influence to stress the importance of healthy eating, those girls are overweight. And, I have an issue with the girls wearing weaves and lace fronts at such a young age.

I really like how this show comes on after Dance Moms. Although people may not agree with the way the children on this show dance, I think the dichotomy of both shows speaks volumes. Even though the Bring It! children are the same age, they seem more mature.

...And what's this about Ms. Diana being a former porn star?

she was at one time - she came out and spoke about it before the show air i think or after thr first one because when some people found that out they did not like that she was in charge of these young girls and wanted the show taken off the air. they were posting about it online and on some local websites here.

I agree those girls really respect Dianna. I mean I don't even see them roll their eyes at her when she's yelling. I love how she compliments them after they perform and "she has their backs". When she joined them in dancing, or doing a stand, against the D:huh:B, I really became a fan. I take that back...it was even before she joined them to dance, it was when the D:huh:B turned their backs the first time and she said okay I'll watch them.
